TRIBUTES have been paid to referee Ted Egan, who died while officiating Saturday's Focus v Upton AA Reserves match in Aigburth, Liverpool.
The West Cheshire League fixture was abandoned after Mr Egan, 69, who lived in West Kirby and was also a respected referees' assessor, collapsed. He was taken to hospital where he later passed away.
Upton AA secretary Barry Gaulton said: 'I have known Ted for many years and he was a friend of Upton AA.
'He originally came from Chester and his children attended school with mine.
'In the mid-70s he moved to West Kirby. He was passionate about football and it is a tragic loss.
'Upton AA would like to offer our condolences to his family and his wife, Gill.'
West Cheshire League officials have also offered their condolences.
Only consolation for his family is he died doing what he loved by all accounts.
Very sad news indeed, prayers with Ted's family at this time.
RIP
