    West Ham/Curbishley/Neill

Does anybody else think that the reported £70,000 a week that Neill is going to get at WHU is a disgrace? And ironic as Curbishley recently criticized the 'Baby Bentley' culture at the club and then he sanctions this kind of deal.

Surely the players he criticized - Ferdinand/Reo-Coker etc will now be looking for a pay rise? Making the so called 'Baby Bentley' culture worst?

And for them to allow Neill to supposedly put in a clause in his contract to allow him to leave the club for £500,000 if they are relegated. Bonkers.

What happened to loyalty in football?

West Ham deserve everything they get for sanctioning a deal like this.

    I hope they go down.
Twin boys - now arriving late August 2008.

Its gonna be Fernando and Gerrard if I get my way!

5Live reported tonight that the deal was worth around 60k a week. Neill was interviewed by them and he confirmed that he had been a boyhood Liverpool fan however he choose West Ham because, slight paraphrasing here, 'Liverpool did not show him enough warmth'

However if i were in his position and it was a choice between 30k a week and 60k a week i'd be taking the 60k a week thank you every much.

Same here, he's doing the same job why not get twice as much for doing it.

If we are honest, how many would really turn down £60K per year over £30K per year to change employers, but, at least be honest about it that's all.

No shame is accepting and acknowledging that West Ham offered more money and more first team football than anyone else.

You'll find that the clause will suit both parties. West Ham go down they are going to struggle to pay his wages so they would have to sell him. They are not going to find to many clubs willing to pay 2-3 million for him and keep paying his current wages so he may be reluctant to leave. a club pays 500,000k for him and pay him roughly what he is on just now then he'll leave.

I probably agree that the clause will suit both parties. However what gets me is that Neill will take his £70k a week while they’re in the Premiership but if the chips are down and they get relegated he'll gladly trigger this clause and leave the club without a second thought.

If he thought anything about the club he’s just joined why didn’t he put a clause in his contract to say that if they are relegated he’d take a pay cut (just a thought, can’t see that ever happening though!)?

The whole thing smacks of desperation by WHU.

Don't agree with your example, relative to the cost of living jumping from £30k a year to £60k a year is HUGE, plus most jobs aren't that emotive, so it's an easy decision.

However Neil would have been paid a very handsome wage of over £1.5m a year if he'd picked LFC, which to the ordinary person is a huge sum, therefore £3m a year isn't as big a jump in relation to the cost of living, he can afford to live VERY comfortably on £1.5m/yr. Plus football is emotive, how many on here would pass up the opportunity to join 'your' club for the 'paltry' sum of £1.5m/yr?

There's only LFC officials and fans harping on about this, everyone outside our club suggests that there is nothing wrong in Neill choosing West Ham for the money and living & playing in London.

I only wish thet Neill would be more honest in his briefing though, and I really do hope that West Ham do a Leeds.

agree caco - Neill is already a millionaire, the difference between £30k and £60k a week is not going to change his lifestyle that much, a more realistic way to look at it would be (these are rough figures but I'm sure someone clever dick could work it in relation).....

You enjoy your job, but get offered to join a prestigious company, the size of business you have dreamed of working with for £500 a week but get offered the same job at a **** company that is struggling for business for £650 a week

I agree that he should be honest and admit that it's about the money - but greed is seen as a bad thing, he doesn't want to admit to being greedy.

                      Even though he is!

The comparison was a doubling in annual wages, the amounts were just what some would get in a year he gets in a week, nothing was being compared as to relativity.

I'm sure all of us would like to double our wages, and I would admit to moving lock, stock and barrel for that, not pretending it was something to do with being headhunted by a volcanic erection (sic!!)

Why should he be seen to be being greedy, he didn't demand that from either us or West Ham, ffs, he was offered it on a bloody plate, (akin to another story in here about Ridsdale/Seth Johnson magnitude) good luck to him for that, piss poor on West Ham's part I say,

Did he demand it, or was he offered it on a plate? West Ham said do you want this, he said yes please, he would have been seen as being greedy if he said I will sign for LFC if you offer the same.

Let them both sink into oblivion, what goes around, comes around, good karma, bad karma.

I don't think we'll ever know, I'd imagine his Agent has done very well by playing West Ham off against us.

His Agent's gambit would have probably been you'll need to offer Lucas the world for him to choose WHU over his boyhood idols. Which duly they did.

Happily most players eventually rue the day they passed up on the opportunity to play for LFC.

i think its a shame we did not show him enough warmth we should have stuck a red hot poker up his ass and seen if that was warm enough for the greedy c**t!
