Merseyside Police have arrested Joey Barton on suspicion of assault and criminal damage.

The Manchester City midfielder was arrested in relation to an incident which is thought to have taken place in the Wavertree area of Liverpool.

The altercation is alleged to have involved a taxi driver and police confirmed Barton has been bailed.

"I can confirm a 24-year-old man, from Widnes, was arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage and assault," said a spokeswoman for Merseyside Police.

"He has been bailed until May pending further inquiries."

Barton's arrest comes just a month after Hampshire Police investigated claims he made obscene gestures to Portsmouth fans at Fratton Park.

The accusations came after Barton's tackle injured Pompey midfielder Pedro Mendes, but The Football Association later cleared the England cap of any wrongdoing.

In October, the player was fined £2,000 by The FA after being found guilty of a charge of improper conduct and/or bringing the game into disrepute after dropping his shorts at Everton.

On Sunday, Barton threw his City shirt into the crowd following the club's 2-0 defeat at Blackburn Rovers in the FA Cup after he had questioned the desire of some of his team-mates prior to the game.
"I have decided to escape, to defy the shogun. Today I will begin walking the road to hell. But you will choose your own path. So, soon you may be seeing heaven. Choose the sword, and you will join me. Choose the ball and you join your mother, in death. You don’t understand my words, but you must choose. So… come boy, choose life or death."

"You would've been happier if you'd chosen to join your mother in her world. " - Ogami Itto

I don't think that he's a good enough player, without taking into consideration his questionable character. Too many of these "incidents" for me

Arsenal, Liverpool to pounce for Man City's Barton
            tribalfooball.com - March 12, 2007

Manchester City midfielder Joey Barton will quit Eastlands if they're relegated at the end of this season.

The Daily Mail says the England midfielder is determined to stay loyal to the Eastlands club but won't stay if they plunge into the Championship - a real concern as their struggles to steer clear of the drop zone continue.

Barton will brush off the abuse hurled in his direction after yesterday's FA Cup exit at Blackburn as long as it does not continue.

But just like the unhappy fans, he wants to see significant investment in new players after criticising half the team for not fighting for the City cause.

But if the mooted takeover does not materialise he is the one who could be sold to raise transfer funds with Arsenal, Liverpool and Newcastle all interested in his battling prowess.
