Im not convinced at all. Anyone remember our trip up to Boro on the opening game of last season? 0-0 the scoreline with 91 mins on the clock, Boro get a corner. Instead of trying to score he instructs them to play the corner short and time waste. We should have been winning 4-0 at least by this point but instead of going for it(or at least taking a reasonable risk of crossing the corner into the box) and grabbing a winner he infuriates the home fans with his incredible negativity.

As for Downing 'coming of age' at the World Cup and being an important England player, again im not convinced. He may well come good and to his credit McClaren should know but all i see is a player who kicks the ball past an opponent and legs it as fast as he can. His crossing is pretty decent though.

Gerrard will be ace at RM but should play instead of fat Frank in the middle (will never happen as he would never dare drop him). Joe Cole could be an option out on the right then if Downing is gonna play LM.

Anyone else really hate his ridiculous combover/combback?? He'll be completely bald by the time he leaves the job, cant wait for the before and after photos.

Also i find him smug, dull, full of cliches and his teeth scare me.

All in all i would say we're screwed but he has some ace players at his disposal.......with McClaren we'll be painfully familiar, flattering to deceive and stumbling into quarterfinals. With a manager such as Benitez or Wenger England would be world beaters but neither are stupid enough to take the job!!

In terms of Englishmen he is the best man for the job... the first English manager for years to win a domestic competition and as a result the first English manager for years to take his English club to a Euro final.

He is much more experimental than other managers and holds the respect of a lot of the English players.

Unless we had gotten Hiddink or Capello, I dont think anyone will do a worse job than him.

People like Pearce and Allardyce who have passion still have no proven track record, whilst I would doubt if Benitez or Wenger would have taken the England job. O'Neill would have been the only other candidate in the frame in my opinion.
