    Roeder And Newcastle

Glenn Roeder has claimed Newcastle are so used to underachieving that it has become 'stitched into the badge'.

The Magpies bowed out of the UEFA Cup earlier this month after throwing away a two-goal advantage to lose on the away goals rule, a result which Roeder claims is indicative of the club's fortunes.

And he insists he is the man to stop the rot.

'That result against Alkmaar is Newcastle,' he told the Daily Express. 'Not just this season, not last season, it is the Newcastle which threw away a 12-point lead at the top of the Premiership, which you would have thought was impossible. That is Newcastle.

'The problem is, it has happened so often. If you go back years and years to when I was a player here and before, the fans are used to it, they expect it to happen. It's stitched into the badge. Somebody has to unstitch it and I want it to be me.'

Roeder has defended his record at St James' Park and denied that he is 'keeping the seat warm' for Alan Shearer.

The former England captain has long been touted as a future Newcastle boss but Roeder believes he is doing a good job and does not expect to make way for Shearer, who is currently forging a media career following his retirement from playing.

Roeder told the Daily Mirror: 'Alan texts me before every single game wishing me all the best. I don't think I am just keeping the seat warm for Alan.

'I see myself here long term, very much so.

'As a football person he understands the problems we have and he has endorsed that during the season, saying how difficult the job has been.'

The former West Ham manager also said he wanted to be judged on the quality of his signings, not players from former regimes.

'I do not believe anyone else could have done any better, I do not believe it.'

'Now, anyone who comes here will be my signing. I am happy to be judged on (Obafemi) Martins, (Antoine) Sibierski and (Damien) Duff, but three signings is not my squad.

'If we can get another four then half the squad will be mine.'

I don't know what to make of Glenn Roeder, sometimes i think he's a good, honest, hardworking bloke who's had to deal without alot of difficulties in recent years and done so with dignity.

Other times i think he's a yappy, swarmy aul git who deluded to the point that it's make painful viewing/listening to him slabber on about how big a
club Newcastle are when they haven't won a fcuking trophy is 50 odd years.

Sometimes I think we just have to accept other people have a different idea of what big club means. It's up there with players being "world class" as the phrase used to mean the most number of things to different people, with everyone willing to defend their definition to ludicrous extremes.

I like Roeder he is a top coach and has proved to be a decent manager at Newcastle.

I disagree. There is a great squad of players up there just waiting to be whipped into shape and made into a decent team but Roeder is not the man to do it. IMO he's not strong enough to do it. The recent capitulation in the Uefa Cup was disgraceful but it was accepted too readily - even by the manager.
I can see Roeder being there this time next season - saying the same things as is being said at the moment - as Freddue as put the club into so much debt (£90m?) there's no cash to go and get a decent manager.

I will agree that there have been massive injuries to the squad though at certain times during Roeders reign.

I alos thikn a lot of player (looks at Nicky Butt) go to Newcastle when they no longer have the fight for a top club but want a good wage. He also inherited a squad which had one CM of note (NB doesn't count as until a fair way into the season he looked like he had regressed into a conference player), no defenders who could defend and before he bought in Martins no strikers. On top of this the chairman seems to steadfastly refuse to sign anyone for money who won't make a headline.

There are some decent players there, and I have criticised managers before as I suspect a huge injury list often means crap training methods. However at NUFC is seems to be choosing signings badly as some of their players have been injured for years.

I'm not saying we should sign up Roeder if Rafa leaves or anything, just think he is a decent manager. Maybe it's just the contrast to Souness though
