While cleaning up my work inbox, i found this gem sent after the WC...
Now that the tournament has been purged of those chancers frae o'er the border we can know reflect soberly on their mighty achievements in the beautiful game.
Take a seat Messrs Hansen, Shearer, O'Neill, Lineker, Motson, Wright, Lawrenson (gathered from all around these islands to give England a hand-job) and consider the following:
Brazil 7 finals
Germany 7 finals
Italy 6 finals
Argentina 4 finals
Hungary, Holland, France, Uruguay, Czechs 2 finals each
errrr.......
and oh yes.......
England ONE FINAL!!!!! Alongside the Mighty Sweden.
But of course they are that good that they have mustered one other semi-final here they managed ONE 4th place as compared to:
Germany 2 3rds and a 4th place
Brazil 2 3rds and a 4th place
Sweden 2 3rds and a 4th place
France 2 3rds and a 4th place
Italy 1 3rd and a 4th place
That's not to mention Portugal, Yugoslavia, Poland and Austria (giants
all) who have all been to 2 semi-finals...the same as mighty Albion.
When the commentator said at the start of the quarter finals that "the traditional super-powers were all gathered" clearly that was a quiz?
Spot the deliberate mistake?
England rank slightly higher than Spain as great underachievers. Oh hang on....
Spain did win The European Championships....and England....haven't. But that is a different tale.
Greece anyone?
