When was the last time visiting fans from abroad to England spent time in hospital beaten up by baton wielding thugs?

I bet not one charge is brought against any of the heavy handed carabiniere.

Frisk slams police role in Man Utd chaos
      tribalfooball.com - April 05, 2007

Former referee Anders Frisk blasted the Rome police for their role in last night's chaos for Manchester United fans.

Frisk - who previously experienced trouble at the Stadio Olimpico first-hand before his retirement in 2005 - believes the police's heavy-handed tactics were largely to blame for the ugly scenes.

"The approach from the Italian police - my feeling was that they were very close to the United supporters," he told Sky Sports News.

"What caused it was something that had been thrown. The Italian police reacted very, very aggressively towards one or two incidents.

"This is what caused everything to catch fire."

The Swede also claimed that lax security on the way into the ground was another factor.

"When I went through the gates I was not searched at all, and of course if you do not search the people they will bring in bottles and things to throw at each other - that was a major mistake," he added.

In 2002 a game between the Italians and Turkish side Galatasaray, refereed by Frisk, ended in a mass brawl, while two years later he abandoned Roma's Champions League clash with Dynamo Kiev at half-time when a missile thrown from the crowd left him with blood pouring from a head wound.

"It was very bad for me to be back at the Olympic Stadium and witness what was once again not good for football," he said.

One fan who was injured at last night's game said Italian police had targeted English supporters for beatings.

Victor Hindley, 42, of Blackpool, said he saw several police clubbing a man in his 60s as he lay bleeding on the ground.

The aerial fitter said: "It was the most terrifying experience of my life.

"The police were brutal, they were really laying into some of the Manchester United fans. They hardly seemed to touch the Italian fans.

"I saw them hitting one old guy with batons as he lay on the ground. There were lots of police and they were all attacking him at once.

"We got chased away from the ground by the police and the Roma fans must have seen this and followed us.

"The police disappeared and then a gang of about 100 Ultras turned up and cornered us.

"Some of them had machetes and knives and others had chains with padlocks. They just ran at us.

"I got hit loads of times and there was blood everywhere."

Mr Hindley, who lives with his partner Gemma and two-year-old daughter Molly, said he believed he had suffered a cracked skull and was going to hospital for treatment.
Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

Well, I doubt him and other invited guests would be searched anyway.

Surely he should have been frisked if only for the wordplay value.

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

I actually think we are missing the whole point here - the reason the police targetted the scum fans was partly down to the club itself.

When Manure came out with the 'advice' to their fans about Rome it wasn't exactly very diplomatic was it? I mean even the Mayor of Rome got in on the act ripping into the club.

So it's fairly obvious to me that the police were severely pissed off before the game ever kicked off - how would you feel if some team who had never played you before started mouthing off about you and your fans?

Manures press releases and web-site advice started the build up of tension in my opinion.

That happens in most european games and I can't say that the scandal that happened yesterday happens that often.

It's up to UEFA to sort out the mess but until then the away fans will have to get used to what the Scum supporters got yesterday.

It's no secret what happens to the away fans in Europe. If you don't want to be provoked then stay at home until UEFA have sorted out the mess.
Did i not say the Manc fans who did react were wrong to?

Oh and Shaggy, your attempts at a patronising post don't wash unfortunately. Your Lens/Lille point is of very little relevance and you bringing up Hillsborough only supports my claim that the Manc fans were trying to escape a crush rather than trying to cause trouble.

Very likely. Heard an Italian journalist say on the radio that those statements from the scum were widely reported in Italy and infurated a lot of Romans.

One Manu fan said the police were decked out in riot gear and looked like they were hoping for trouble... you'd have to be pretty stupid to start it then, no? The Roma fans must have been pissing themselves at winding them up so successfully.

Having said that, I think that if something like that happened in the street you'd be prosecuting the police and that's what some of the fans caught on camera being repeatedly beaten on the ground and unable to comply with whatever the police wanted (if anything other than to beat the **** out of them), should do.

This is from YNWA, posted by Kev, some of you lot will know him.

Appologies if this breaches any rules, but I found this very poignant to this thread...

I opened my front door at 3am this morning.

I'm still in shock and anger after what I witnessed. It was a combination of pissed up and sober ticketless Liverpool fans, arrogant, incompetant and aggressive PSV stewarding and arrogant and aggressive policeing. But the main cause I am sorry to say were the ticketless Liverpool fans.

During the day were at least 2,000 Liverpool fans without tickets, you couldn't walk 5 steps in the town centre without getting stopped and asked for a ticket. I left the city centre around 5:15 to head to the ground, it was getting fairly animated and packed then. But, and it's a big but, it was very enjoyable and in good spirits.

There were 16 Liverpool stewards at the ground, our job on European away trips is basically a travel steward who gets in the ground for nothing, but let me explain further. On official trips, you need football stewards otherwise there are no trips, firms will not fly or drive you to a game. The main crux of our job is to ensure that everyone knows what times the coaches are, where they are and count you off and on. When the turnstiles are open, we have no power at that ground, we get put were the home stewards don't want to be, we help as much as we can, but it's only as much as the home club let us, at PSV they didn't want us.

I wasn't there for the game in September, but 2 or 3 of the stewards were and they sensed that something bad was going to happen before the gates were even opened, but their concerns and fears fell on arrogant on deaf ears.

I was positioned inside the ground by the tea bar at the end of what I can only describe as a tube, the first time I felt a bad atmosphere was when more and more fans were calling me all kinds and pointing the finger at me and the other steward 'for not doing our f***ing job and coming a a f***ing freebie and for being a complete lazy t***'. Other fans were just concerned about the crushing outside and how we should sort it out.

It got worse when I saw women, kids and grown men crying through anger, fear and frustration of what was going on outside. At one time I had 6 or 7 fellas all pointing in my face, some were more drunk than others but their faces were so red with anger they spat in my face as they shouted, I just had to take it as any sign of aggressiveness from myself would have made it worse, but then I had to imagine what they had gone through to get into the stadium. I have never witnessed scenes like that before, and no RP it was not just another away trip.

Some fans did not get in till after 45 minutes, some fans with proper tickets did not get in at all. They pleaded with us to let them in, they pleaded with the PSV stewards, we pleaded with the PSV stewards, but they would not budge – what more could we do?

Just before the second half kicked off the last Liverpool supporter got in, we had 4 stewards but they were verbally abused for what had gone on outside – how could they be held responsible for something that they had no control over? One Liverpool supporter either fell over, or was attacked, either way he fell over and cracked open his head. 2 Liverpool stewards tried to clear a path for a stretcher to get to him, the stewards were once more abused and the fans refused their own supporter the space to get him out of the ground. After about 20 minutes he was finally taken to hospital in a bad way.

Anyway, normally when all the fans are inside the stewards take position inside the our end to watch the game, all of us refused the offer for the fear of our safety. So we went into a small room underneath the stadium and watched a bit of the second half on tv.

A couple of the stewards were visibly upset over the amount of threats and abuse they suffered from our own fans, I was in a daze myself which was when I called Ant, I seriously had to check my own emotions in check when I was describing what happened.

As I said above, it was a combination of things, but the major factor was ticketless Liverpool fans who were prepared to do anything to get into the ground, the majority of them were bladdered.

One thing though that I just cannot get my head around is the large number of scallies, who wear the boss gear etc etc, they have HJC stickers on their coats, shirts, jumpers or trackies, yet they (from my observation) were the ones who did not have tickets, they were the ones who were the most pissed and they were the ones who caused the mayhem outside the turnstile by trying to blag themselves in and were prepared to rush the gates trapping and crushing their own fans in the process. Yet they are the ones supposedly supporting the fight for justice – it just doesn’t register.

Unused tickets for Galatasaray away, tickets for the PSV game in September, forged tickets and photo-copied tickets were used to get in or tried to get in. In the mayhem outside, tickets were snatched out of the hands of supporters. There may well have been empty seats, but every single Liverpool fan had to walk passed me last night, and there were definately more than 2,000 - it might have been 2,002 only for the two fans who were that pissed they couldn't walk up the stairs so crashed out in the toilets.

At this moment in time and the way I feel I wont be doing another European, stand around doing nothing, jobsworth freebie trip. It’s just not worth it. As PSV was undoubtedly the worst experience I have ever had as a steward, and I just hope that those fans who were severely upset and affected by last night, got home safely and have calmed down a bit.

Yes the police were *******s like you would expect them to be and i genuinely have sympathy for any innocent manc hurt, no sympathy however for any charging seat throwing manc who deserve a battoned head - but all this hysteria over policing is now papering over yet more hooliganism by the mancs, the SECOND time this year they've been involved and people are falling for it.

"It was ALL Lille's fault blah blah blah"

"It was ALL Roma's fault blah blah blah"

Hopefully sooner or later it's going to dawn on the football authorities that the problems at Lens and in Rome involved visiting mancs. God only knows what would happen to LFC if our fans behaved this way in two consecutive European aways.
