To be honest none of the big name players at Newcastle are there for footballing reasons. They all chose Newcastle as the offered the biggest wage of all the interested parties. I suspect that they will all stay, even if they weren't motivated by money Alladyce is a bigger name manager then Roeder and so if anything I would say they would be more likely to stay.

I feel very sorry for Roeder. He inherited a terrible squad, unbalanced and with few quality players who could be relied upon. The signings made seemed imposed from above - I have no doubt he would have wanted a striker but I suspect he would rather have had a good defender than another injury prone winger.

He has bought in a number of youngsters and considering the level of injuries he has done reasonably well. I think that stability would have helped the club long run.

However I would say that I rate big Sam as a very good manager (much better than Roeder) and if given a free range to buy in players I think he will be a success. He may however need time to get the setup at Newcastle equivalent to that he had at Bolton and I suspect he might need time to build a team in his mould. I imagine he will buy in an almost completely new defence (speculation: Distin to return would seem logical - physical and available on a free, just the sort of signing Sam goes for).

He's had a lot more than that. 3 at Madrid in one season, now 2 at Newcastle.

      He left to win things

Trouble is with Newcastke, every time they chant sack the board, the manager gets the boot, when will Shepard learn they want the ****er gone, he left once but somehow still finds himself in charge of the club

4 managers in 3 years says it all
We managed to rectify it, though, because it now says, "Cook" where it once said "Cock", and "Pass" where it once said "Piss", so itโ€™s slightly less rude.

With Titus Bramble being the absolute worst excuse for a defender i've ever seen

Their a Circus of a club, how the likes of Duff,Owen went there i just dont know and how Given is still there i just dont know he's wasted at Newcastle.

It will be interesting to see what Fat Sam does with them and to see if he can handle a club that has massive ambitions

Bolton could be takers for Michael Owen. It's the only top team he could aspire to go to now.

It really depends on how you define "success" ...for the Toon, success is signing someone like Michael Owen.

Did Sam actually win anything at Bolton?

I really can't remember if it was Roeder who signed Owen but if it was then I rest my case.

As for Martins, well he was definitely signed by Roeder therefore I don't see the logic behind you saying that he wouldn't play for Fat Sam.

Souness signed him. Let's not turn this into another Owen thread for AFII to jerk off to though, ok?

Fair point, he won the Championship (may have still been division one who knows) play offs and that is it.

I would say that finishes of 6th and 8th in the PL constitutes success for Bolton though, all of the teams outside the top 4 these days target Europe as success and with one of the smallest budgets of those teams he has done pretty well at that.

I think realistically success at Newcastle would be UEFA cup football in both of the next two years and to impliment what is known at other clubs as "a defence". Which is harder than it might be as since they bought Boumsong Shepard seems to be unwilling to spend any money on defenders. In the long term he would have to win something but I suspect that he would be a hero amongst the fans for bringing even the league cup.

I really think that Shepherd has to go before they can be truly successful.
That club really should be capable of winning the League Cup/FA Cup and being involved in the latter stages of the UEFA Cup รก la Spurs, IMO.
