How do you feel about this?

SHAME ON YOU FERGIE, YOU'VE LET US ALL DOWN
MANIC MONDAY FALL-OUT FOLLOWING PREMIERSHIP FINAL-DAY DRAMA
Oliver Holt Chief Sports Writer 15/05/2007

SO MUCH then for the idea Sir Alex Ferguson was the guardian of the spirit of our beautiful game.

So much for the idea that our finest living manager would stand up for the fairness of the Premiership on its final day of the season.

Because Ferguson did not just play a weakened side against West Ham United at Old Trafford on Sunday.

He sent them out into the thick of the relegation battle showing all the fight of a pussycat on valium.

In the process, with a 1-0 defeat, he let Sheffield United down, he let the Premiership down, he let his club down and he let himself down.

If he had done what he had said he was going to do, he could have rescued the end of the season from the injustice that has blighted it.

If he had put his best team out, or even something close to it, he could have earned our thanks a new after a campaign of scintillating footbal from his team.

United should have been more than capable of beating West Ham, even with the FA Cup Final just six days away.

And if they had, Wigan's 2-1 victory at Bramall Lane would have completed the story and allowed English football to escape its shame.

West Ham would have been relegated, as everyone accepts they should have been, while Wigan and Sheffield United would have survived.

Except Ferguson went back on his word. He did not play his strongest side. Nowhere near it.

No wonder Blades boss Neil Warnock was astonished when he heard United had started without Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, Cristiano Ronaldo, Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand.

No wonder he felt Ferguson had sold him a dummy. The truth is, Ferguson sold us all a dummy.

In the process, he opened himself up to accusations of letting his pal Alan Curbishley off the hook.

And he dragged the name of his club into a murky, despicable business that has tainted this season.

How sad that Ferguson could not do the right thing. How sad that the sense of honour and fairness on which he prides himself deserted him when it mattered.

It all boils down to the fact that it wasn't just that one game that sent Sheffield United down, West Ham's form was amazing seven wins out of nine games is top of the table form not relegation form.

I remember the lower teams resting players in the cup because they wanted to concentrate on the league, the same argument could be applied to them playing their best teams in all competitions.
We managed to rectify it, though, because it now says, "Cook" where it once said "Cock", and "Pass" where it once said "Piss", so it’s slightly less rude.

I agree, it's not United's responsibility to save Sheff Utd, as it wasnt ours, when we went to fulham.

No one can tell the manager which team to pick, there's a reason they have squads of 25!

Yes well, I agree to some extent as well, but then he should have kept his mouth shut about playing his best team then, shouldn't he?

I distinctly remembered him saying he would respect the relegation battle by playing his best team or something to that effect.

A/ Fergies job is to look after United. Warnock was just trying to pressure him into playing his first eleven when he made the comments about him being a traditionalist who would no play a weakened side. Everyone else who thought Fergie would not do whatever he thought best preparation for the cup final is a moron.

B/ Man United completely outplayed West Ham in the first half. Admittedly they pulled out of some tackles but even a first choice team would have done so with nothing to play for.

C/ Who is to say that the best players constituted the strongest side for that game? Surely players who are motivated and want to gain a place in the FA cup final are likely to give a better performance than a full team of players whose only thought is to keep fit for the final.

Spot on, and there is anoher point to this that I have not seen anyone comment on anywhere. The players that Man United rested knew they would be picked for the cup final. Therefore they may have relaxed for this game if they had played and not gone hell for leather for fear of injury, therefore making it easier for West Ham. By playing fringe players they may have seen it as a chance to get into the side for the cup final and therefore given their all. Therefore it could have been made more difficult for West Ham

But West Ham should have gone down for me. Simply because they should have been docked off points for playing ineligible players.

Even though I can't be happier to see Sheff Utd go down, Fergie deserves all the criticisms in my opinion.

He came out before the Chelsea game and talk about wanting to keep his best players for the West Ham match and "preserving the integrity of the league" and so on and so forth, only to sell that notion short by playing less than half his first teamers. Very hypocritical.

Whereas Rafa has always been open abt his selections straight to the point.

Yup. At least Rafa wasn't a hypocrite. If Fergie kept his mouth shut no one could say anything...Warnock etc should just shut the **** up, managers' only loyalty should be to their own teams and we've got a CL final to look forward to.
