Tottenham have completed the signing of Southampton's teenager Welsh international defender Gareth Bale.
Southampton said Spurs will make an immediate payment of £5 million, with further additional payments that could see the transfer fee rise to £10m.
The 17-year-old Bale said: "I'm just excited to be coming to a massive club like Spurs. It's pushing forward and I want to be part of its future."
Bale had only one year left on his Southampton contract.
The youngster had also been linked with moves to Arsenal and Manchester United.
Spurs had a bid of about £10m accepted by Saints in January, but Bale rejected the transfer at that time.
Following Southampton's failure to gain promotion this season the prospect of first-team football in the Premiership at Tottenham looks to have been enough to change his mind.
"I really want to play in the Premiership," added Bale. "That's very important to me and this is a fantastic opportunity. I've thought long and hard about it and feel the time is right to move on. I'm signing for the biggest club in the world and it's a tremendous honour.
"I could have gone in January but I wanted to try and help Saints win promotion. I felt I owed them that and I didn't want to move mid-season.
"I wanted to keep my focus on learning and developing my game at a critical stage of the campaign."
Bale made his debut as a 16-year-old last year for Saints - becoming the second youngest to ever play for the club - and this season he has become a regular for Southampton and Wales.
He became the youngest Welsh international when he played against Trinidad & Tobago in May last year, setting up a late winner.
Tottenham sporting director Damien Comolli said: "We have been following Gareth for a long time now and have been very tenacious, so we are absolutely delighted to get him here.
"He's a player of great quality and, as we always say, our aim in each window is to improve the quality of the squad. He has the ideal combination to become a top, top player."
Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’
Its like they always do buy a hot prospect and then a year or two later the big boys come in and buy them after they've seen another year or two in the Prem.
What im puzzled about is did anyone place a bid
When you feel like you're done, you are not alone........
Although I don't think we were ever in for Bale I think Spurs have set an example of what Rafa means about moving quickly to secure your targets. Hopefully G&T have taken note.

They bloody better our I, Rafa and the rest of the fans will be very pissed off.
You see Spurs never been in the Champs League but still get quality players and pay top dollar. We could learn alot and i hope we do

I think it's a foul, and if the ref gives it. He got to give a penalty. I know it's outside the box, but you see them given that close to the area. So if the ref gives it he's got to give the penalty as it so close to the area. But I think it's a penalty. Robbie Savage 8/11/06
Are you watching Manchester United? Are you watching Chelsea? This is Liverpool F.C taking over the bloody world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
To be fair it is only £6m up front and if they have to pay the other £4m he will have proved his worth in all likelyhood. It seems like a decent deal to me. Spurs seem to have a strategy of taking the gambles the other big teams refuse - Defoe, Berbatov, Dawson, Lennon etc. So far I would say they have done fairly well from the strategy and in general the value of the players they have bought in the last few years has gone up. I have a suspicion that a lot of teams are going to wish they took up this deal in a few years.
