    Alan Smith to Newcastle?

    SMITH IN SWITCH TO TOON
    EXCLUSIVE
    By David Mcdonnell 22/06/2007

NEWCASTLE have won the race to sign Manchester United outcast Alan Smith in a deal worth around £3.5million.

Toon boss Sam Allardyce made his move for Smith after the England striker made public his dismay at not being offered a new deal by United.

But Allardyce failed in his bid to make it a United trio at Newcastle after the Old Trafford hierarchy rebuffed his attempts to sign defensive duo Wes Brown and Mikael Silvestre.

Smith revealed his desire to stay at Old Trafford only last week but admitted he had received no assurances about his future from Sir Alex Ferguson, a revelation which sparked a scramble for his signature.

Despite his reluctance to leave United following a £7million move from Leeds in 2004, Smith has been assured of regular football at Newcastle under Allardyce, something Fergie could not give him at Old Trafford.

And Smith is said to be relishing the challenge to prove he can get back to the level he was at before breaking a leg at Liverpool in February 2006, which ruled him out for seven months.

A host of Premiership clubs including Tottenham and Aston Villa made clear their interest in signing Smith but Newcastle have won the race.

Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

I can't see what people see in him. Very average player, no class and a crap scoring record. Has been outscored by Heskey every season for the last 6/7 years!

If they sign him then one off Martins and Owen will be off IMO.

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

There was a perdiod before he got injured at United when he shoed he has a lot going for him. He looks a shadow of the player he was though. He used to have good touch and awareness and was very strong. The only question has been his goalscoring but in a team like United he was a very good fit as there were always 4 other attacking options to weigh in and he is good at setting up opportunities for them.

If he goes to Newcastle he will become the executive Kevin Davies.

He's meant to be a really decent guy off the pitch too - yet when he steps out onto the turf he changes.

He actually started his United career really well, then got shifted around and eventually moved into midfield ()

Given a long run in a team I think he could score goals.

Smith is surely worth more than 3.5m. That would be an excellent signing for Newcastle in my opinion.

I think his wages are quite high and he doesn't look to have fully recovered from his injury. I think it is about a fair price.

Barton, Smith, maybe Bellamy on the way? Yikes. Get the red cards ready.

Smith is rubbish. I hope they keep the ****

If Man U sell him and sign a new striker coupled with the loan return of Rossi they will be looking very strong in all departments.
