I'm surprised no-one has mentioned Michael Carrick? £18.6M??

If he was any slower on a football pitch he would be dead

i thought riquelme had an impressive world cup he was at the heart of everything argentina did good. should never have took him off against the germans! although he really did bottle that peno against arsenal!

yeah - know what you mean but i just get the impression that if everything is humming and right around him, he's fine. not a man to get stuck in and raise a game single-handedly though. i don't think he's **** - just a badly and bizzarely flawed brilliant footballer

I'd go for Lampard, just can not play in any other system other than where its all set up for him to make a late run into box or shoot from the halfway line. Doesnt pick up the game like SG or even ballack do and his passing is average.

Lampard for the same reasons as parm has written here. Its nice to see that even the press have started noticing that his game is all about shooting from anywhere and other players laying things on plate for him, so that he cant miss.

I would rate him 4th or 5th best english central midfielder currently with at least SG, Paul Scholes, Owen Hargreaves and Scott Parker ahead of him.

out of that list lumpard is the most overrated. all fat frank does is hang around outside the penalty box and shoot a lot.

r.ferdinand, a. cole and jenas are also wildly overrated players.

They've said he has potential, which surely he has, no?

                    My vote goes to Pele.
Would you care to explain the last line?

And BTW - my vote goes to Lampard - I watched all England's games live during the World Cup 06 and I'm still shaking my head in disbelief...

I think Lampard is over rated for related reasons to the above but he is at least very good. His short passing is the best in the England squad (possibly next to Hargreaves) and he is excellent at shooting low and hard and on target - basically he is a %ages player and for that he is top notch.

Depends on who is doing the rating but while decent some of the MOTD effusive descriptions of Viduka take some beating.

Rio Ferdinand as a player on his own without reference to a partner is vastly over rated by a lot of people.
