    CONCACAF Gold Cup Champions [R]

I know none of you care, but the USA won our Region's Cup today, beating Mexico again, 2-1. A very entertaining game, and relatively clean. Played with mutual respect. The USA missed two open nets from about 7 feet (including one of the great all time misses by DaMarcus Beasley), so it should have been 4-1, but Benny Feilhaber's goal, which put us ahead after Landon Donovan's penalty tied it, was one of the best goals by a USA player ever. Dare I say Gerrard-esque?

Anyway, we're in the Confederations Cup in 2009. Off to Venezuela for the Copa America now (we're in trouble).

    Bravo USA!

    well done...

it is a strange competition, it seems only those two nations are the only one's of some quality. are there any other nations that can play good football up there?

I was quite impressed with that Beasley when he was at City, he's off to Rangers now isn't he?
Dreams come true. Without that possibility, nature would not incite us to have them.

Canada and Honduras are on the rise, but our region is otherwise relatively weak. Costa Rica was once pretty good when they had Wanchope leading the line, but have fallen off a bit. T&T only lost to England 1-0 in the World Cup, but their whole squad basically quit over payments from their FA, so they fielded a pretty weak side. I agree, a relatively weak Confederation.

Looks that way. He was not great, but did OK in the tournament. His miss in the 89th minute was shocking; Alone in 2 feet in front of goal and he put it off the crossbar.

If not for the intervention of a Mexican linesman, it might well have been Canada in the finals.

Worst call ever. I admit, Canada was robbed and this is typical of the terrible officiating in our Region. That said, it was past 4 minutes of added time (of which 2 should have been awarded). But uh, that's just an excuse. Terrible call. Canada on the rise; I hope they qualify for the WC in '10...

can't be bothered with the US national team to be honest, i didn't even know the tournament was on

i just cant watch substandard footie played the way the US plays...no ideas, no sophistication, just a bunch of boring athletes who have been brought through the quality system we have in place of ODP, college, and MLS :whatever: it's a system that revolves around money and favourtism. you have money and live in the right part of the country you progress, if you don't you're **** out of luck. ever wonder why 90% of our boys come from california or florida?

if only politics didn't rule US soccer, we might actually have a good team. strange in a country as diverse as the states we don't have more latin players in the team....

and the manager...bruce arena jr. aint he? what has he done to qualify to coach the national team? he's good mates with bruce arena thats about it. we need to hire someone from europe who has experience, with bradley we will just tread water and maintain our level of mediocrity. we were an embarrassment at the last world cup. the US has so much potential but from the top down US soccer is being run by a bunch of muppets who don't have a clue. this is allowed to continue because footie is not a major sport and the public don't care if we're good or not

footie in the states is an interesting phenomenon, it's still so new that you have people in positions of power who are not qualified to be there and don't understand the game. it's incredible how few coaches actually watch or understand top level football, and it's reflected in the *******ized, hybrid form of the game i see on fields across the country (i've played and coach all over the country at a high level). There are people on this board who could do a job at all levels of US soccer, such is the state of it

it is getting better at the grassroots level, in the past 5 years the popularity of the european leagues has risen signficantly and you hear kids talking about how barcelona blew the title while they're wearing a boca juniors top, and some of these kids are amazingly skillful....but where do they go? i've seen countless kids lost in the bull**** system we have in place because opportunities are limited and inconsistent. i've been down that road as have many of my mates. on top of that trials and moves to european clubs get canceled because of work permit issues so there is no reprieve from overseas....

anyway rant over, US soccer can **** off

Worry not for Captain Becks is on his way to wave his magic right foot and make everything better.

It's not good because it's rude. It's good because it looks like it's good because it's rude.

If anyone can save us it's Captain Becks, he is moving to LA purely for the football, his love of the game is infectious

I agree that the youth system is ****ed and that we have it all to do, but we played well yesterday and I hope we grow from here. All we can do is support the team and hope they get better, write our letters and support the players. They're my national team, after all, and I will always support them. So, I understand your points clearly and agree with many of them, but I will not stop watching or giving up hope for change and the development of the game. You sound bitter.

Bad experiences in the national team setup along with those of my mates have put me off the national team for the time being. It's run by absolute clowns, simple as.

Over time I'm sure I'll get back to supporting the team, but some major changes are needed

It's good of you to support the team like you do, they need all the support they can get

I agree; Sunil Gulati must go. I also agree it is a white-"dude" culture and suffers for it. Would love to hear those stories sometime. More importantly, we have Liverpool to support!
