Is Beckham's contract with the Galaxy really worth the reported $250 million?
No, and it's not even close. Leiweke refused to discuss the details of Beckham's deal, but league sources confirmed that Beckham's guaranteed salary will be around $50 million over the entire five-year length of the contract. That's hardly chump change, but it's still less than the salaries of a lot of U.S. sports stars.
Nor will Beckham's salary bankrupt MLS. Per the league's new designated-player rule, MLS's owners (who otherwise share the costs for all player salaries) only have to contribute $400,000 a year for each of the league's 13 designated-player exceptions. (Right now Beckham is the only one.) The rest of Beckham's salary comes from Galaxy owner Phil Anschutz. The result: Anschutz is on the hook for around $48 million guaranteed with Beckham, while MLS owners only have to pay $2 million.
Don't worry about Uncle Phil's ability to pay: He has a net worth of $7.8 billion, according to Forbes.
There is more to Beckham's deal than the guaranteed salary, however. Beckham will also earn 40-to-50 percent of Galaxy jersey sales and an undisclosed share of ticket revenues. And that's not all. "There are certain aspects of the deal that are ultimately about the upside value of the league as a whole that David can participate in," says Leiweke. "Our partners all had to sign off, and they did. We had a couple of interesting board calls, but they did."
Long story short: Beckham may or may not earn $250 million over the next five years, but the majority of his income will continue to derive from endorsements and not from the Galaxy or MLS. From my perspective, it's a shame that the phrase "$250 million contract" became gospel in the media, because it's terribly misleading and just not correct.
In any case, Leiweke feels confident about the agreement. "This is an economic deal that makes sense for everybody," he says, and as long as Beckham doesn't suffer a serious injury or become a total bust on the field, I'm inclined to believe he'll be worth the investment."What in the wide, wide world of sports is a-goin' on around here?" - Taggart AKA Slim Pickens in Blazing Saddles

Didn't think it was that bad a report to be honest. Wasn't going mental about Beckham, or about MLS.Originally posted by BrooklynRed View Post
Quite a sardonic look at the furore around him going to what is basically a bit part sport in the states, that's going to have a massive problem trying to attract youth away from drafting into Basketball, American Football, Baseball....and probably athletics and Ice Hockey as well.

You don't know what it is like to have the game constantly run down by the sports press here... he is a typical example. In his previous article on Beckham he shows his stripes. Now he's an expert on the Beckham beat. Nauseating to me.Originally posted by Rohan View PostDidn't think it was that bad a report to be honest. Wasn't going mental about Beckham, or about MLS.

I am American and I have to laugh. . . . So what IS an exciting sport. . . . Baseball !?!?!?! I would rather drag my scrote across nine miles of barbed wire than play baseball - I wasted 1 summer in my life playing it and will not waste another minute watching it. Nothing like watching the pitcher scratch his balls for 20 seconds while he decides when he will pitch the ball. Now THAT is entertainmentOriginally posted by BrooklynRed View PostIn his previous article on Beckham he shows his stripes.
Whether "American" football or basketball are better sport than football is in the eyes of the beholder, but most of the jack-a-knapes are probably rabid baseball fans

Been to a Major league Baseball match. So exciting that most of the crowd were chatting to their mates, eating hot dogs, or drinking beer than watching the game.
American football could be an exciting game, if it wasn't so dragged out. No game should last 4 fecking hours.

If the likes of Pele, Best, Beckenbauer and Cruyff couldn't turn the yanks on to footie 25 years ago, what chance has a second rate player like Beckham got?
Fact is the MLS is a second rate league with second rate players, who would want to pay to see that? Most true American "Soccer" fans will just stay at home and watch the Premiership, Serie A, La Liga and the Champions League on the telly instead.
Bottom line is that it's about money, not about making the game more popular than it is already in the States. Beckham will get paid, the Galaxy/MLS will make a fortune from cheap merchandising tat with his name on it. The football is largely irrelevant.I hate Polanski

That is true for basketball, but American football, not so much. If you made goals worth 7 points and games ended 21-14 American like football, would that make people happy? American football scores are a masquerade; Low-scoring, defensive American football games can make for the best games. People can understand that, but its the inflated number of points for a touchdown that give the illusion of high scoring. Don't know why people can't see past that.
True, and I think it is because we've never been that great at the game; On a global level, our players and our game is relatively anonymous.

I hadn't thought of American football in that way. That's very true. The power and explosiveness of American football is hard to beat. Even for someone who thinks the game maybe isn't very interesting overall, it's still quite a spectacle.
As someone else has already pointed out, baseball can be very slow with apparently little action. A lot of the game is about ritual and nuance. Maybe I'm wrong, but I tend to think that baseball has exceptional status because of the place it holds in American culture? All kinds of things could happen to the sport, but people would still pay attention and hold it in esteem because it's baseball?
It'll be fascinating how things turn out with Beckham.
