Real Salt Lake have confirmed Freddy Adu has been given permission to discuss a move to Benfica.
The United States international has been granted the opportunity to clinch a transfer to Europe after being left out of his club's MLS game with New England Revolution on Saturday.
Adu is now on his way to Portugal to negotiate personal terms, although his current club appear resigned to the teenager signing for Benfica.
"Major League Soccer and Real Salt Lake have given permission to Freddy Adu to travel to Europe to continue discussions with Portuguese club Benfica," read a statement from head coach Jason Kreis.
"This is certainly a scenario that does not surprise us, and we would like to thank Freddy for his time here and wish him the best of luck.
"Our organisation will continue to focus and concentrate on the second half of the MLS season, with our recent success against Everton and Boca Juniors serving as a springboard towards a fresh start.
"There are a lot of new faces on this team who believe in each other, and as a result think we have now begun to move in the right direction."
A fee of $2million (£985,000) has been agreed for the midfielder, who is expected to sign a five-year contract with Benfica.
