You skipped your economics classes didn't you?

It's about supply and demand. Liverpool (for instance) can demand a certain price from match tickets and merchandising because people are prepared to pay it. There's a demand.

Essentially it is the players that put on the show, ergo their agents are asking that their player's are suitably recompensed. Much in the same way a film star puts bums in seats, a footballer does as well.

Let's not forget not everyone can play football, it's a talent, and usually a person with a great talent in a sport where the demand and following is massive gets well paid.

    Down with communism.
Yes bob i understand the elasticity of demand.

I suppose its the socialist side of me that finds it unfair when some people like nurses (who are also talented but in a different field) are paid poorly for the brilliant and important work that they do and entertainers whom play a different role in society get paid vast sums.
    We come not to play.

That's the key point. We'd all agree that footballers shouldn't earn more than Doctors, but it's the supply and demand which causes the high wages.

              Dyer
              Neill
Friggin all of them basically. To think anyone gets £100,000 every week for playing a game when their supporters have to work 5 years for every half arsed match they play means I begrudge the lot of them. Even the best of them.

While any footballer earns in one football match what it takes a nurse 7 years to earn, then I'm afraid I begrudge them all.

Unless anyone thinks that a footballer's 90 minute contribution is of similar value to 7 years nursing. But I don't.

Its one of the things switching me off football. And one of the reasons why I'm less arsed these days if footballers get stick from the fans when they play ****.

That said i object to things like Diouf taking legal aid for his assault charge and non proportianality in law, a £60 speeding fine won't deter a footballer from speeding where as if instead they all had their nuts cut off that might.
Actually I think the fans should get it in lower ticket prices or better facilities.

Footballers should receive an income premium for the fact that their careers are short, but other than that why are they paid so much more than the people who watch them?

nothing stops a football going back in to education or changing a career path, many people do so after their 30's so why should footballers be any different?

only because their initial career path is destined to be short. for most other people of their age who they'll be competing against in the labour market, they'll have generated up to 15 years experience and expertise in that field.

someone starting afresh in a trade at the age of 35 or so will be competing against kids out of college with no experience or people of their own age who have lots.

i suspect it'd be tricky for them so i've no problem them getting a bit more than usual, but i've a big problem with the sort of wages they do get these days. its obscene frankly, and me liking footy doesn't justify it.

then again this is the problem with the market. it throws up the most bonkers of anomalies where we give resources in abundance to people who kick a ball around and give sod all to someone who is daily engaged with helping to heal the sick.

                        Yeah lifes a ****er.

Whats interesting to my mind is how much more frequently you here these arguments about footballers and no one worries a jot how much actors/musicians or other entertainers are paid.
