How long do we think this will keep him out?

Wayne Rooney lasted only 45 minutes of the new Premier League season after injuring his foot in Manchester United's goalless draw with Reading.

Reading defender Michael Duberry accidentally landed on the England striker's foot in the 37th minute and was quickly sent for a scan.

And it has been revealed that the 21-year-old has suffered a hairline fracture of his left foot.

The news will rock United, who are short of experienced centre-forwards.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson was forced to deploy defender John O'Shea as a makeshift striker after Rooney failed to make it out for the second half.

Ferguson said after the game: "It was a painful blow and Wayne could not really stand on his foot. I do not think it is as serious an injury as when he broke his metatarsal.

"But his foot did start to swell and it was not worth starting him in the second half."

England manager Steve McClaren will also be concerned about the injury, with a friendly against Germany pencilled in for 22 August but, more crucially, two Euro 2008 qualifiers scheduled against Israel and Russia in September.

Well I was thinking 6 weeks or so, but Ginsoak's comments almost make it sound as though they considered keeping him on for the second half which was odd

If it is about 2 months then he misses the Manc derby, BS at Woodison, and Chelsea at the toilet

i don't think they'll miss him that much, Tevez will replace him with ease...

I disagree. It's a huge blow to their squad.

Ferguson was complaining after the game that when Rooney went off they didn't have an out and out front man.

What the hell does he want - to spend another thirty million on top of the fifty plus he's spent already?

He wants 5 substitutions per team per game.

Maybe he's complaining about Saha, Solskjaer and Tevez not being fit to play....

Seriously, its good to see one of the contenders drop pts early but theres 37 games left. all this gloating will come back to haunt us

mancs are the last team you'd want to write off...

He still wouldn't have had the cover that he wanted for Rooney. I didn't watch the match but Rooney went off at half time didn't he? Surely he had all three subs available to him at that stage, he just didn't have the right ones.

The fact he didn't is the only reason Torres is at LFC.

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.
