Exactly mate, he wanted to get rid of experienced players like Beardsley, Houghton & McMahon to make his own squad. Them 3 are LFC through and through..won the league and cup for us to name a few. Souey wanted drastic changes too early when the club only needed a bit of a steadying no more. Legend of a player, ok manager.18-5-7-8-3

Yes. Players like James and Dicks and Ruddock and Stewart and Walters and Saunders and Piechnik and Kozma and Clough and....Originally posted by Darth Marty View PostI ****ing so disagree with you AFII.......Souness was, and probably still is, LFC through and through, the ****ing problem we had was the ******s who played for us at that time. Can you imagine players not giving their all for a man like Souness??! Thats why he fell short..cos he was too fiery and passionate. And I for one dont think thats a fault when managing the team you love.
Not saying I want Souness to manage us after Rafa or anything..just saying his stint as LFC manager did nothing to dampen my....loves a bit strong, but you know what i mean....for the man.
Graeme Souness =
Hang on a minute. Who signed all of those clowns? Oh yes, it was Souness wasn't it?
One of the best players I've ever seen, but his eye for a player, his lack of any noticeable man-management skills and his tactical naivety were his undoing as Liverpool manager. Not to mention the shameful business with That Rag.
He was unlucky in some respects, particularly in relation to injuries (Barnes being the most notable casualty), having to take over an ageing team and also having to follow in the footsteps of the most-loved servant the club's ever had (along with Shanks). And he wasn't afraid to give the youngsters a chance, introducing the likes of Fowler, McManaman, Redknapp, Harkness, Matteo and Marsh to the first team. But ultimately he just wasn't good enough.
Funnily enough I've always liked Souness and think he's one of the few telly pundits that talks sense. I'd just prefer to remember him as the heartbeat of our greatest ever team, "a bear of a man, with the touch of a violinist".

Agree with everything you said, particularly the bit I've quoted. He's a very good pundit - he's articulate and talks with a great deal of authority and knowledge. When you listen to him talk about the game, you wonder how on earth he made such a poor manager. Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’

Souness ruined Liverpool when he was in charge, he got rid of all the Irish players and other good players and brought in rubbish like David Speedie, Mark Walters etc.....
We were still getting over it up to a couple of years ago.
He took us backwards
As a pudit he is brilliant and one of a few that are quilified to talk about it and that make sense. I love the way he puts Jamie Redknapp in his place when there on together

Dalglish signed Speedie. Souness moved him on fairly sharpish.
As for the Irish players, there were only Staunton and Houghton that I remember. Staunton was sacrificed (not literally, that would be horrific) as a result of the limit imposed on the number of foreign players allowed at any one time. Houghton asked to leave, Souness wanted him to stay.

He was faced with the ludicrous ruling of Irish players as foreign and a limit of 3 foreign players which was a bit of a ****er for us at the time. Having said that he made some frankly bewildering choices of players in vs players out.Originally posted by thesilverfoxlfc View PostSouness ruined Liverpool when he was in charge, he got rid of all the Irish players and other good players and brought in rubbish like David Speedie, Mark Walters etc.....

Yes. As I said earlier, I don't think that's in question.
He's always been immaculately groomed though. I think he deserves some credit for that.

As a pundit i think he is great, at the start of the punditry he was ok but since he's been over in Ireland working for RTE during the World Cup he has come back much better like he has let go and says what he feels..........

Houghton left cos he got an offer from Villa that he felt he couldn't refuse. Souness wanted him to stay at the club. Not to do with the 'foreigners' rule.Originally posted by Warren View PostHoughton wasn't subject to the rule as he was born in Glasgow.

Souness admitted that when he became manager of Liverpool lots of players wanted out which he couldn't understand so he got rid of them all at once and replaced them with players who weren't as good. He should of taken his time a little and found similar/better players than we already had and then let them go.Last edited by Pacman; 17-08-07, 02:05 PM.**** OFF HICKS AND GILLETT WE DON'T WANT YOU.
