Hounding the Ref - a solution

they way people hound and barrack the ref even our own players has been bugging me for a while. I noticed it loads of times in yesterday match, chelsea players man handling the ref and in his face. we are not angels ourselves.

Ok the penalty decision was wrong even the ref admitted it today but the i am trying to put that behind me.

Whats i suggest is that we introduce a rule like in rugby where only the captains can approach the ref and if the ref wants to cool things down, he has a word with the captains.


this would stop the endless sight of 8 players around the ref shouting at him. its not fair and it does not make his decision making any better.

whats everyones idea on this.

As an ex rugby player, the abuse of referees is something that bugs me too. It is ingrained in the game and would take a long time to moderate with any success. Making the captain the only person able to sound the ref out seems like a good idea. Whether it would work is another matter.

It got to one stage yesterday when I thought the Ref should had gone to Maureen and Rafa to say he would send the next person off that was in his face.
What I would like to see this with sort of persistent infringement and volatile behavior towards the ref would be another rugby rule and a sin bin for 10 minutes. Before making the decision and banishing someone to the sin bin it should go to a 4th official to cement the decision with the use of the TV camera's.
There are loads of pro's and con's to this argument but I would love to see players go to a sin bin.

If refs were still allowed to carry guns, or 'tool up' in some other form they wouldn't get hounded as much.

You can imagine it though Rooney chases Clattenberg across the pitch calling him a ****, Clattenberg pulls a glock on him, Rooney ****s his pants. jackanory!

Agreed totally, whatever faults rugby has theres no doubt its a far more disciplined sport and football would hugely benefit from taking some of its pros.
The captains only being able to chat to the ref being one, sinbins possibly and also the most basic one (and possibly most important) being the controversial try decisions being checked by the "3rd umpire" or whatever the hell the rugby equivalent is called.

All of these would, in my opinion, improve our game hugely without disrupting the all important flow!

p.s - why not try the captains thingy and anyone else who whinges to the ref gets an automatic red card. Bet that would stop the moaning ****s up almost instantly.

i used to play hockey and if you swear you can get sent off for a few mins

it does work.

It does need sorting out in football. they only do it because they can.

That rule is already in place but no one give a **** about it and the PL and the FA doesn't seem to care how many times a team break against the rule.

I'm not 100% sure but if I remember things correct then they intruduced that rule before last season.

Only teasing fella....if its in then they need to have a meeting with all chairmen, managers and captains and let them know they will be strictly enforcing this ruling with immediate effect. Im pretty sure the chairmen will realise the huge financial implications of having a team who has players constantly sent off and so would easily solve that problem.

They introduced it after the Arsenal vs a team I can't remember game, when almost all the players got involved.

i think yep the rules are there but they dont do anything about it.

I think for the first few weeks it will be a bit of a joke as there will be loads of sendings off but then they will learn.

i think the Pl are scared as the passion is a big selling point of the permier league is the passion so they dont want to lose it.

I dont think that they will lose it but they are too scarred to act. Plus the impact on the England team etc with people pulling out of friendlies due to sending offs etc.

but a little pain and it will be worth it.

I dont think we should have refs. Just play like you would in the park.

I'm not usually in favour of violence but we are as one on this. It's the only way he'll learn and it will act as a deterrent for the others.

I think half the players should use rounders bats though - we don't want to go too American.
