Skysports.com understands Derby are lining up a move for Manchester City's Darius Vassell.

Rams boss Billy Davies is actively scouring the transfer market for reinforcements and he has made a new striker one of his top priorities.

Davies is now believed to be considering a move for former Aston Villa ace Vassell.

Vassell's future at Manchester City has been the subject of speculation all summer with the club having rejected a bid from Besiktas last month.

City chief Sven Goran Eriksson is believed to be willing to listen to offers for the England international having brought in the likes of Rolando Bianchi and Valeri Bojinov this summer.

Davies is keen to bolster his forward line as he looks to find an experienced Premier League performer to add to his attacking options and he could offer Vassell the chance to make the move to Pride Park.

Why do these teams bother making an effort to get promotion to the Premiership if they arent willing to fork out decent money to buy top notch players?

Not spending and banking the cash is a fair enough tactic for a smallish club. Spending good money on ****e like Vassell is completely pointless.

If they had any ambitions at all they should spend some cash and try to stay up. That way over the years being in the top-flight will keep them financially safe.

Derby boss Billy Davies has signed winger Eddie Lewis for an undisclosed fee from League One side Leeds.

Lewis joined Leeds from Preston in June 2005 on a free transfer and was in the final year of his Elland Road deal.

The 33-year-old was part of the North End side managed by Davies which was beaten in the Championship play-off final by West Ham in 2005.

Lewis made only 22 appearances for Fulham before moving to Preston in summer 2002 for £500,000.

He played 96 games for the Elland Road club, scoring nine goals

Look at teams like Bradford and Swindon who spent big money on wages and broke transfer records when they come up to the Premiership.

They got relagated and stuck with fantastic debt when the parachute payments finished. So much so that they have both spent time in the bottom division since the Premier League started. I know Wimbledon have too but circumstances are slightly different with them.

Derby are taking a prudent approach and quite rightly so. It may take them a couple of times coming up but they could build a team that can stay up. Both Bolton and Charlton did that succesfully.

Sorry but the premiership has got a lot more quality about it nowadays with the influx of foreigners. Gone are the days when teams like charlton could come up with average players and compete with other teams with average english talent.
