LISBON (Reuters) - Former European champions Benfica have sacked coach Fernando Santos after being held to a draw by promoted Leixoes in their opening league match of the season.
"Benfica have reached agreement with Fernando Santos to end his (two-year) contract," the Portuguese club said in a statement on Monday.
Former Benfica player Fernando Chalana, a member of the backroom staff, will take charge of training later on Monday.
The 52-year-old Santos, who took over after Dutchman Ronald Koeman quit at the end of the 2005-06 season, is the first coaching casualty of the Portuguese campaign.
Former Benfica coach, Spaniard Jose Antonio Camacho, has been tipped to return to the club.
Camacho helped the team finish second in the league in 2004.
Benfica, who won the European Cup in 1961 and 1962, drew 1-1 at Leixoes on Saturday.
