    Puerta dies following heart attack

    Scary stuff.

Antonio Puerta's prognosis is "very serious", according to the hospital where the Sevilla wing-back is being treated.

Puerta collapsed in his own box after 35 minutes of Sevilla's Primera Liga opener against Getafe on Saturday and appeared to briefly lose consciousness.

The Spain international did walk off the pitch but it has been confirmed he then collapsed again in the changing rooms.

Puerta was taken to the Virgen del Rocio hospital in Seville and doctors there have issued a worrying statement on the 22-year-old's current status.

"He is in the intensive care unit where he has been given assisted ventilation and is experiencing hemodynamic instability," said a medical report issued by the hospital.

    "The prognosis is very serious."

Sevilla president Jose Maria del Nido says Puerta's life was in danger at the Sanchez Pizjuan and praised the club's medical staff.

"Fortunately the club doctors and the machines managed to resuscitate him but we experienced some terrible moments because the life of the player was in danger," he told the club's official website.

Sky Sports website is saying heart attack but that his coach says the prognosis is improving. Very close to dying on the pitch it seems. Really shocking.

Sevilla wing-back Antonio Puerta remains in a 'critical' condition in hospital after suffering a heart attack.

Puerta collapsed on the pitch during Sevilla's win over Getafe on Saturday and then passed out again in the changing room.

He is currently in intensive care in hospital and doctors have issued an update on Puerta's condition.

"The arrest has been caused by repeated incidents of serious ventricular arrhythmia," said doctors at a news conference. "These are being controlled with treatment.

"The patient's situation, 36 hours after being brought in, continues to be critical as a result of the serious consequences of the cardiac arrest, including some effects on the brain.

                  Risk

"When a patient is in a critical state there is always a risk.

"Also, after a cardiac arrest as prolonged as this, it is too early to give a prognosis or to venture possible after-effects."

Meanwhile, Sevilla's city rivals Real Betis have put aside all their rivalry to show unprecedented support for Puerta.

Players, coaching staff and directors from Betis visited the player in hospital on Sunday, after the club's fans had displayed placards at their game against Recreativo wishing Puerta well.

Pepe Leon, the Betis president, has reflected the views of the majority of fans as he stated that football was a secondary concern at this time.

"There are some things that are just more important than football," Leon told Radio Marca.

Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.
