    Riquelme to Atletico

Atletico Madrid agree terms with Villarreal's Riquelme
    tribalfooball.com - August 30, 2007

Atletico Madrid have struck personal terms with Villarreal midfield ace Juan Roman Riquelme.

Cadena Ser says the Argentina international is set to move to the Vicente Calderon with the two clubs having already settled on a fee during negotiations over Diego Forlan's move to Atletico last month.

Riquelme's Atletico deal is for two years with the option of a third. The contract is worth £3.5 million-a-year - a cool £1.5 million-a-year less than what he was on at Villarreal.
Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

Saw this last night and it strikes me as a very odd move. They are now overloaded with attacking midfielders. How will they fit the likes of Riquelme, Simao, Garcia, Reyes and Aguero into the same side?!
Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’

Odd signing indeed. They have six good attacking midfielders and only three can play at a time.

Reyes, Simao, Riquelme, Aguero, Maxi, Garcia.

      Stupid.

I'm not sure about that - United effectively played with 4 last year and the numbers are no worse than our 4 into 2 central options.

I have no idea how they play but I can see it being possible to accommodate those players but it will be interesting to see if they can do it in practice. Or if a t least one very good player becomes available in January.

Isn't Aguero played as a striker though? As a partner with Forlan.

          Simao / Maxi
          Riquelme / R. Garcia
          Maniche / Luccin / Santana
          Reyes / L. Garcia

          Aguero
          Forlan

Don't need more than one injury and everything changes. They are going all out for this season.

They will probably play 4-2-3-1 with Forlan as the lone striker supported by three of Reyes, Simao, Riquelme, Aguero, Maxi and Garcia.

Aguero is the odd man out because he plays in the same position as Riquelme just behind the striker.

OK, it's a bit crowded for them, although Reyes and Luis may be played up front, I'll be watching Atletico this season hope they do well.

Also, they're selling Luccin their DM to Birmingham. They'll probably sign Motta from Barca but he's not great and he's injury prone. Atleti are idiots, they have FAR TOO many attacking midfielders/second strikers and despite Forlan being a good player it's incredibly idiotic to rely on him so heavily as they are. He's highly likely to go through long dry patches. The only other genuine striker they have is Mista who seems well past his best.

I don't know how they're gonna keep them all happy. Their defence isn't great either. I can see defensive or quality teams really giving them a run around.

Does that mean he won't sign for Everton after all?

Let's see how it goes, it's true that are looking very unbalanced, but aren't Pablo and Perea worth their salt? With Lopez, Seitaridis and Pernia I as well I though they could push for a top six finish if the new signings gel (which they won't and their manager will get sacked and another one will come and sign a bunch of players who wont gel either and will therefore get the sack as well).

Yeah, they not bad I just don't think they're great at the back.

Pablo is alright, but he seems to have gotten worse after a very good season a while ago. Perea is a good player but nothing out of this world. Seitaridis struggled last season, Lopez is inconsistent as is Pernia. Ze Castro seems a good prospect but isn't quite ready yet. Eller is proven ineffective at the top level.

Hmm Javier Aguirre is a good coach though, he did a great job at Osasuna. I think they'll give him some time, but if they don't deliver by the end of next season, which is very likely; Valencia, Madrid, barca and Sevilla are still quite a bit ahead of them and with Zaragoza, Villarreal and possibly one or two other surprise packages at a similar level. I can't see them piercing the top 4 unless they have a really great season and if the have a bad season they could finish as low as 8th or 9th which would probably seal Aguirre's fate. But i doubt they'll be that poor, I think they'll be between 5th and 7th. Probably the latter.

Must be said though, with those attacking options if they all on song on the same day it'll be something quite amazing. Riquelme, Kun, Maxi, Reyes, Garcia, Garcia, Simao, even Jurado are capable of brilliant play.

I'm hoping for a top six finish from them but I agree with you that they won't break into the top four this season, unless Sevilla let recent events get to them and the toll of the CL becomes too much (we have seen that happen), but even then there are plenty of other teams up there as well, Zaragoza will be interesting as well, was G.Milito the only star player to leave? They replaced him with Ayala so that should be ok for now.

Yeah, Ewerthon left too, but the coach didn't really rate him, he didn't play as much as a player of his ability should have.

They now have some good players to play with my main man Zapater. Matuzalem and Gabi slotting next to him with Aimar and D'Allesandro ahead looks quite nice. No more Celades and Movilla which will improve them. Still a little thin in some areas though, but they should be 5th or 6th. Around Villarreal and Atleti.

I know Riquelme has his flaws but on his day he is a unbelievable player..i love watching him play when he is on song!

Another team in the mix then, looks like a good first XI, an improvement from last season, who do they have up front along (back up for) Milito?
