    Future of the National team?

Sky Sports News is flooded with idiotic people giving their opinions on the future of the national team. I understand Trevor Brooking but they even got the Watford Academy Director, talk about bloody desperate. There have been many suggestions like academies having to pick kids from a certain radius, squads having a quota of English youth and squad players.

The FA and Trevor Brooking are blaming it on the clubs (what a ****ing surprise) even though they decided to make a national academy in Burton and Brooking said yesterday on BBC's Inside Sport that he can't do anything about it.

I feel that the FA, if they wanted to limit the amount of foreigners coming into the Premiership (those racists), they should enforce a tariff, therefore making it expensive to buy foreign talent and making it possible for English youth to be playing first team matches in Premiership games.

I for one like foreigners coming in the Premiership, it has pretty much made the Premiership what it is today. The most exciting, fast paced, attacking football in the world.

I would like to know what the rest of you Est'ers think?

I like foreigners in the Prem, lots of great players come here and play. They can't place any restrictions on EU players though and that is where a majority of the foreign players come from, something for which I'm glad of.
Our coaching style and lack of a good competitive youth system is the problem for our youth players.

Though tbh I couldn't give a toss about England.

I hate international week, so bloody boring!

If a kid in the UK is good enough he will make it, the question is whether he will make it at one of the big clubs.

The future could be that the England team is made of players from teams like Boro, West ham, Blackburn.
      We come not to play.

The summer tournaments are fun to watch, but essentially nobody gives a **** about International football.

I cant see that ever changing.

I think that at the PL first team level foreigners have had a generally beneficial impact, improving the standard of play in the league and creating a more exciting league. In turn the English players who have made it through are all good players.

Listening to Arsene Wenger the other week he seems to believe that the Academy system has made a big improvement in youth skills at the under 16 age groups and that this will filter up in the coming years. There is however a problem with teams skimming off top youth talent from the continent that these players will find it hard to gain experience. At PL first team level this will I think prove to be a problem as many of the bigger European teams have competitive adult football for their feeder teams which allows their players to have experience when they get here which English players would not get the opportunity to gain.

I think we need to find a way to allow young players to have competitive football against adults in the near future. I'm not sure that it would be feasible or necessarily desirable to enter new B teams into the existing English league structure due to the way that support for the existing teams has built up and the fact that people are unlikely to pay decent money to watch say Liverpool B.

I'm not sure what the solution is. I guess the easiest way would be to allow two extra substitutes in the PL and to limit these in similar ways to the Champions League B squad list.

I was thinking that the Scottish divisions have a majority of local talent and it's not really helped their national team, whereas in England, only the cream of the crop make it through the ranks and therefore the national team should almost pick itself.

I wouldn't be too bothered if a law was passed that English Premier League clubs had to field a minium of 3 U.K players per match.

                Never going to happen though.

England won in 66...when did foreigners start flooding the PL?
                  25 years later?

What happened in the meantime then Brooking??

Oh...that's right. You played for England.
                  England won nowt.

Brooking was actually a good player.

England think they have a divine right to be good at football and win things. They dont and they wont. Football (and sport in general in the uk) has to be re-invented from the youth set up - professional status, and coaching seems to be a huge flop, if you look at the candidates for the England job (before McClaren had it) they were pretty much rubbish, Scolari would have been my pick. Also the british press has a lot to answer to....they build someone up then knock them down at all too regular intervals, its ****ing scandalous that we allow them to get away with **** like that. In an ideal world Id love Liverpool to have all english players BUT ONLY IF THEY WERE THE BEST WE COULD GET, and they so obviously are not at this moment in time so who can blame Chairmen/Managers/scouts for looking abroad?

Lack of emerging English talent debate.

I'm just watching SSN and they're having a debate about the lack of emerging English players in the league. Pearce, Brooking and Barry Fry of all people criticising clubs like ourselves for not having enough English youngsters in the side.

My opinion is that you can't simply play a player because he's young and English we have to play players who will keep us competetive at a high level. Hobbs or Agger? Martin or Reina? Torres or Linfield? etc... etc...

If they're not good enough at this time then they're not good enough, that's not to say they wont be in 2-3 years time though.

Stuart Pearce was moaning that there's no point in him going to watch us or the chavs or the filth for young English players because there aren't any. That's short sighted in my view because if he was doing his job properly he would go and watch some of the top premiership clubs reserve side to see who is playing and if they're good enough. Just because they're not playing 1st team footy doesn't mean that they're not there, does it?

So, where do you stand on this debate?

There is NO incentive to bring English players through. In the absence of that, all teams will do whatever it takes to be the best!!!!!!! (which usually means more foreign players)

There is plenty of incentive. We bring players thru till they are about 18 and sell them for about half a million to some ****ty 2nd div outfit. If players are good enough they rise to the top.
