Dunno, as much as we bang on about Arbeloa having Messi in his pocket I can count quite a few games this season alone where Gerrard has been extremely quiet.

I like to think there is a bracket of truly world-class players and Gerrard is in that. Alongside Messi, Ronaldinho, Kaka, Ronaldo and a couple of others. I'm happy we have a representative there because most teams do not.

I don't like to use the world class a lot and the press as well as football fans use it quite freely like the word celebrity. I'd like to think someone who is world class is someone who has been able to be an integral part of the side as well as being able to showcase their talents on the biggest stage. Obviously you have the two best players the sport has ever seen: Maradona and Pele. Without a doubt, these players were brilliant and were representing their countries at a very young age and single handedly winning the World Cup in 1986 and 1958 respectively.

You then have a second bracket of players: Platini(boo!) Beckhanbauer, Dalglish, Van Basten, Eusebio, Puskas, Cryff, Di Stefano, Gullitt, Zico, Baggio, Maldini, Baresi, Garrincha, Zidane, Best.

Now you have this generation of players: Kaka, Ronaldinho, Fat Ronaldo, Pisstiano Ronaldo, Sir Steven Gerrard, Lionel Messi, Van Horseface, Thierry Henry. Do you think they will be able to break into that second bracket, only time will tell. These players are still young, some playing in their prime and only when their careers are over and we see their achievements then we can say this player is as good as.... and whether they were truly world class.

and his volley in the champs league final is one of the best goals you'll see for perfect technique
oh mate that volley was superb, on his left foot as well i think. ZZ

Sorry to bump an old thread but didn't see the point in starting another one.

Did anyone else see Messi's performance against Zaragoza tonight, simply mind blowing. Not a better player on the face of the planet at the moment and on his way to becoming the greatest of all time, he's just phenomenal.

His run to win Barca's penalty tonight had me out of my seat, just incredible, beautiful stuff.

He is simply in a league of his own right now, and on a night like yesterday there is simply no stopping him. His control on the ball is just about perferct and a joy to behold.
