On the occasion of the death of Adolf Hitler,Irish Prime Minister de Valera paid a visit to Eduard Hempel, the German minister in Dublin, to express sympathy over the death of the Führer. Along with President Douglas Hyde, de Valera was the only head of government to express condolences.

Mate of mine told me that this is why the German football second strip is green. Not sure about that one though.

The Catholic Church lent some support to Nazism simply because The Nazi's were at polar odds with Communists who banned the practice of religion. The Church then managed to get some of the tar off the Nazi brush. Politics and Religion should never be mixed

I think the Long Fellow had a certain amount of admiration for the way Germany was transformed to a superpower becoming self-sustaining under Nazi rule but more importantly I guess was the relief that Irish neutrality was respected somewhat and we were not dragged into such an awful conflict

Not to mention the deals done with the Nazis.

If Germany wanted to use Ireland as a landing base to attack Brittain then Ireland would be given Self Rule in a 32 county state.

It's because we were the first country to play them after the war and they adopted our home kit colour as their away kit colour as a mark of gratitude

He does seem to have got his wires crossed on that one
