Manchester City midfielder Stephen Ireland has withdrawn from the Republic of Ireland's squad to play Germany and Cyprus in Euro 2008 qualifiers.
Ireland has claimed he 'would not do his country or himself justice' after his controversial withdrawal from the last qualifier against the Czech Republic in September.
The news comes as a further blow for manager Steve Staunton for the Group D meetings at Croke Park with Germany on Saturday and Cyprus four days later following full-back Stephen Carr's withdrawal earlier today with a hamstring problem.
Ireland, 21, pulled out of the Republic's last qualifier against the Czech Republic in September citing the death of a grandmother but later admitted he had made it up as he wanted to be with his partner who had suffered a miscarriage.
Defeat to the Czechs effectively ended the Republic's qualification hopes but the City midfielder gained an instant recall to the squad with the Republic boss insisting 'it's history now'.
But now Ireland has revealed he is unsure whether he could provide a 'positive contribution' to the side.
He told www.mcfc.co.uk: 'I have thought long and hard about whether I would do my country and myself justice if I joined up with the squad. Unfortunately, I don't believe I would on this occasion.
'The support I have received from Mr Staunton and the FAI has been excellent and everybody at Manchester City has also been superb. However, I do not believe I can make a positive contribution to our efforts to qualify.'
Manchester City boss Sven-Goran Eriksson added: 'This is disappointing for everybody. Steve Staunton and I have been working together to help Stephen through a period which he is clearly finding very difficult.
'We together have left no stone unturned in our efforts to convince him he has so much to offer his country and that international football will greatly benefit his long-term career.
'I hope that Stephen will soon feel stable enough to resume his international career.
Well, here we are in a room with two manky hookers and a racist dwarf. I think I'm heading home.

The Manchester City midfielder controversially pulled out of Steve Staunton's squad for last month's qualifier against Czech Republic.
Ireland claimed his grandmother's death had forced his withdrawal, although it was later revealed his partner had suffered a miscarriage.
The 21-year-old has taken the decision to skip Saturday's game against Germany as well as the Cyprus clash four days later.
"I have thought long and hard about whether I would do my country and myself justice if I joined up with the squad," Ireland told City's official website.

Disappointing

When you feel like you're done, you are not alone........
Translates to he's too embarrassed and ashamed to face the manager and Ireland squad.
God knows what he said to his Gran
Maybe he just doesn't want to be away from his wife for 10 days after she's just suffered a miscarriage. At least when he's training with city he's back home with her every day, on International duty he'd be away for an extended period of time.
We managed to rectify it, though, because it now says, "Cook" where it once said "Cock", and "Pass" where it once said "Piss", so it’s slightly less rude.
His wife has just suffered a miscarriage. Clearly most people in this thread are a lot thicker skinned than me because that would **** with my head a bit aswell.
If he turned up and played like ****e he'll get nothing but abuse anyway so he's on a hiding to nothing.
Playing football is still only a job - family comes first.
What have I learned, Mr Mackay? Three things. One - bide your time. Two - keep your nose clean. And three - don't let the *******s grind you down
