McClaren: Robinson as good as Peter Schmeichel

    McCLAREN: `ROBINSON IS OUR SCHMEICHEL`

Steve McClaren has described Paul Robinson as 'England's Peter Schmeichel'.

In a remarkable show of faith in the error-prone keeper, McClaren confirmed that the Tottenham keeper would play against Estonia on Saturday and announced: "I trust him with my job".

While Robinson has been depicted as the best of an average lot at a time that England are suffering from a dearth of quality keepers, McClown provided compared him to ManYoo legend Peter Schmeichel, considered to be the finest goalkeeper in Premiership history.

"I'm not at all bothered by what I've seen with Robbo. He starts. He is our Peter Schmeichel," McClaren enthused.

"Sometimes players go through bad spells and have bad games. But I think you've got to have belief and faith and trust in your players.

"With this squad, you know the history of them. If they've performed well for England in the past then that's taken into consideration."

Although Robinson has kept 12 clean sheets in his last 14 outings for England, his reputation has been stuck on a downward spiral since a disastrous match in Croatia twelve months ago. He was widely criticised after gifting Germany a goal in last month's friendly at Wembley, but McClaren is adamant that Robinson retains his confidence.

"Everybody is human. Everybody has frailties and makes mistakes.

"I feel the same confidence in Robbo that we had in Peter Schmeichel when I was at Manchester United. I would not play him otherwise."

Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

I'm sure I also heard him saying "He's never let us down".

      Er, England 1 Germany 2?

It's one thing trying to build up his confidence as a coach. It's another to lie in public.

Truly an England coach in touch with time he lives in (Brown, Darling, Cameron, Blair...).

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

I hate that too. I also hate the way he begins every single answer with a big “Yeeeeeeeeeeeaah”….trying to come across as all relaxed and pally. I hate how he narrows his eyes when he’s trying to make a serious point. I hate his hair, I hate his ruddy cheeks and I hate his gnashers.

Every time he does it I feel sorry for the interviewer who is surely about to receive a vile chinook wind of McClaren breath.
