    Sunderland's wage system

I just saw this and wondered what people thought of the idea.

Quoted from the BBC gossip pages on Friday

" Sunderland players have their wages cut the lower down the Premier League they drop, chairman Niall Quinn has revealed. "

I'm not thinking that this will happen to the top sides but it could be a saving grace for newly promoted sides on a shoe string budget.
Me, I’m either planning a holiday or I’m on one.

Sounds like a good idea and trust an Irishman to come up with the plan

Contrary to popular belief, I have huge genitals.

I'd be pissed. The assumption that I am not trying my hardest just because we are lower in the league, would piss me off.

FFS Choose a wage and stick to it, my pride is enough to ensure, I'll get as high in the league as I can.

I remember a few years ago Souness said that when he played the balance was much more towards performance related bonuses than basic wage. I think it is probably a good idea as undoubtedly the basic wage is pretty decent.

I'm not sure pride is enough for everyone. Different incentives are needed for different people and this scheme means that the club is better off if the players fail to perform.

If you are unhappy with the arrangement you don't have to sign the contract. Essentially it is a good way of preventing people coming in just for the money. For a smaller club this sort of thing is a very good idea IMO.

But do all players share that thought ?

I tend to agree as gate takings and TV exposure are affected by results so why should the club be further out of pocket if the players fail to perform?

I think it's a fair enough plan. It's not whether you are trying hard, it's about results.

Its the same in any company, if you don't do your job as well as others, your payrise will be smaller.
              Oh I don't know.

It makes perfect sense and as a reward for hard work it seems fair enough.

Too many clubs in the past have gone up and players have sought a huge hike in wages because they think they are big-time players - look at West Ham as a prime example when some of their guys got huge contracts then just stopped playing at the start of their second season. These clubs then end up being relegated with contracts at Premier League level to pay, in addition to new signings on big wages, only to find themselves in the Championship and playing host to some teams with average gates of 7,000.

What if the goalkeeper drops a bollock and lets one in though his legs to cost you 3 points so you drop half a dozen places or if a refereeing error costs you the game?

Some things would be out of your control and would cost you thousands a week.

I wouldn't be happy with that at all.
