Bizarre - he might not be a great manager, but you'd have thought a Championship or League 1 team would have taken a chance with him.... but a Conference team?!?

Stevenage Borough have appointed Peter Taylor as their new manager.
The former England Under-21 boss was sacked as Crystal Palace manager last month after a period of just 16 months in charge at Selhurst Park.

Taylor has also managed Hull, Southend, Dover Athletic, Gillingham, Leicester and Brighton.

Stevenage have been looking for a new boss since Mark Stimson resigned earlier this month following 16 months at the Blue Square Premier outfit.

Chairman Phil Wallace said: "I've done nothing else for almost a week other than work on the managerial position, but it was worth it to get Peter on board.

"This is a Championship appointment in the Conference and shows our desire to compete for promotion this season and next.

"It wasn't easy persuading Peter that this was a great career move for him."

Wallace added: "This is breathtaking news for the town of Stevenage. Peter is one of the finest coaches in the country."

Since 2004, he had also combined club management with his role as England Under-21 boss, until relinquishing the job in January 2007 to concentrate on his position with Palace.

Taylor also had a one-match spell as caretaker manager of the full England team in November 2000.

Without wishing to sound like a name dropping halfwit, i have been coached and managed by Peter Taylor at a coupla clubs during my younger days.
As a coach he is superb without a shadow of a doubt. He will look at you play for 10 minutes and identify the weaknesses in your game exactly. Then he works and works with you on a one-to-one basis on those weaknesses and he will leave you a far better player than you were before he arrived.
But a manager he aint. Some of his tactics are baffling to say the least and he doesnt get his points across well.
Totally different to be a coach or a manager and although i wouldnt know for sure, i always thought he was happier coaching in the lower echelons.

On SSN he said that Dave Bassett told him that he shouldnt take for granted the level he manages at, and when we would get his next job. He felt that Stevenage provided the best chance for him. Although a little odd, fair play to him to make that decision to drop down some decisions. It could work out well in the longer term.

As a manager, thats his level imo.
As a coach, he should be at a higher standard.

I know him very well. In fact I've stayed over at his pad several times and had many a pint with the man.

I was speaking to his daughter yesterday about the Stevenage job and he's chuffed. He'll get them promoted and a Championship side will come in for him

He's getting paid very well as well.
