    Platini's CL proposals rejected

Domestic cup winners will not get to play in the Champions League after a proposal from Uefa chief Michel Platini was rejected, BBC Sport understands.

Platini had suggested that cup winners should play off for the places currently given to the fourth-placed finishers in the top European leagues.

But his proposal was turned down at a meeting of top European officials.

One agreed change is that the team that comes third in the Premier League will go straight into the Champions League.

The team that finishes fourth will continue to play a qualifier to reach the group stages.

    Good news on both counts.

The updated version says the 4th placed team will play two qualifiers.

Not sure it will make that much difference considering that all the likely English clubs will be well seeded anyway.

Yeah but it is more likely that you would play a good team as there will be fewer places from the qualifiers. Good result for the big leagues though.

Would this mean there would be 4 qualifiying rounds?

So, it sounds like Platini has been foiled on both his first ridiculous proposal, and then even this watered down version has been rejected - hardly a vote of confidence for the main man!

In his efforts to spread representation in the CL around, and reduce the influence of the major nations, precisely the opposite has happened and the 3rd best team in England is now a shoe-in.

Im not sure if Platini hasnt shown a bit of rat cunning here and provoked a battle he knew he was going to loose. He has bigger ambitions and he can now say he took on the big clubs on behalf of the smaller guys but the evil G14 got their own way. I dont think he ever gave a rats arse about whether Romanias champions or whoever get to play in the CL. He probably made some big promises when running for the position and just went thru the motions.
