    Comparing "minutes per goal" ratios

It's suggested that looking at the 'Minutes per Goal' ratio is perhaps the best way to measure how prolific a striker actually is. I posted some stats from last season on the "Kuyt scores more than Crouch" thread and this got me thinking. Below are the ratios for everyone who has scored 5 or more goals this season. Unfortunately it's league only as I got the stats from http://fantasy.premierleague.com. Glad to see Torres in the top 4, I'm sure he will finish the season top

    Player -- Minutes|Goals|Ratio
    Adebayor---- 852 | 7 | 107mins
    Benjani------ 884 | 8 | 111mins
    Van Persie--- 590 | 5 | 118mins
    Torres------- 652 | 5 | 130mins
    Ronaldo----- 818 | 6 | 136mins
    Anelka------ 888 | 6 | 148mins
    McCarthy---- 772 | 5 | 154mins
    Drogba------ 787 | 5 | 157mins
    Keane------ 1035 | 6 | 173mins
    Fabregas--- 1060 | 6 | 177mins
    Agbonlahor- 1080 | 5 | 216mins
    Kapo------- 1170 | 5 | 234mins

Actually, the best way to assess a striker is goals/chances IMO

I think it's a combination of everything. Every way of doing it has a flaw. For example in your way, it doesn't take into account that some strikers create more chances or get themselves into better positions. No point having a striker who puts away 80% of his chances if he plays 10 games and only has 5 chances. And how exactly do you define a chance? Is a shot from 2 yards the same as one from 40 yards? The best way is too actually just watch them over a long period of time and judge them on that.

A striker should be able to create chances, either through his footballing ability or like Owen, his movement off the ball. If chances are created on a regular basis (i.e the more the chances he creates or he's provided), he'll have more opportunity to score, increasing his goalscoring ratio.

Robbie was a genius in creating them, either through his pace or his skill, and he could shoot & score from any distance. He often did the unexpected. Torres could be a similar sort of striker.
