No, Italy are top seeds for the World Cup 2010, and they will be top seeds if they qualify.Originally posted by DJS View PostBecause my reply exposes the flaw in your argument, doesnt it?
This is the World Cup thread. Which of the second seeded teams are better than Greece? In fact, I don't need an answer to that. None of them are. They are deservedly top seeds for the 2010 World Cup. And you're talking crap. Again.

What's laughable is the idea that at some random point in time, when I don't know, (maybe straight after 1966?), the hierarchy in football was set, and that the traditional best teams were, are and always will be the best teams.Originally posted by DJS View PostI know the vast majority of european footballers would rather be drawn with Greece than England, whether you agree with that or not.
It's lauaghable that the THIRD team in England's group are on par with Greece...let alone england themselves, and Croatia.
Greece are where they are on the back of achievement. RECENT achievement.
It's this archaic idea and presumption of what and who are the best teams that contributes to the state the England team are in at the moment.
Get with it, and realise the standings are as they are based on a reasonably fair measurement of recent results.
There's no other way of doing it and they ARE a better team than England, and all our home nations and anyone else they're seeded above.

Perhaps we should use "DJS' Subjective Rankings of International Teams" based on who the vast majority of european footballers fear more as a method for seeding countries for future tournaments as opposed to coefficients based on recent results and achievements :whatever:White liquid in a bottle = Milk

*ring ring*
UEFA: "Hello is that DJS?"
DJS: "Hi UEFA"
UEFA: "Just wondering how we should seed the teams"
DJS: "Well, even though Greece have actually won something recently, there are plenty of other teams who are far superior..........."
Well, here we are in a room with two manky hookers and a racist dwarf. I think I'm heading home.

Are you giving out about the European Finals group now or the World Cup? You seem to mix between the two and are a little confused.
No Greece probably aren't the best side in Europe at the moment, but they are the European Champions, and deserve to be top seeds in the group stages. Just like Liverpool weren't the best side when we won the Champions League, but were still top seeds in the group stages.
Do you ever wonder why you're the only person who seems to think the current European Champions don't deserve to be a top seed?

Ok, so on one hand, their win at Euro 2004 wasnt actually indicative of how good they are (as you just admit they werent the best team) but on the other hand (when it suits you), their win DOES mean something?Originally posted by Ritchi3 View PostAre you giving out about the European Finals group now or the World Cup? I also dont think i'm the only person who doesnt think Greece are particularly good (or one of the top four sides in Euro 2008).
I also dont think i'm the only person who thinks England are better than Greece.

They are one of the best teams in Europe. Their winning of the Euro 2004 proves that. It just doesn't prove they are the best, you need a much longer tournament to prove who the best team is.Originally posted by DJS View PostOk, so on one hand, their win at Euro 2004 wasnt actually indicative of how good they are (as you just admit they werent the best team) but on the other hand (when it suits you), their win DOES mean something?

As most guessed, this is down to your bitterness of England not qualifying. and getting a low seed for the World Cup. When England start proving themselves like Greece have done, then come back to us. Greece would be favourites to beat England in a one-off, especially when McLaren was manager. I'd bet on it.

That sums it up really, you have no clue.
I genuinely dont give a monkeys about england not qualifying - read my posts down the years, i've always said i want none of our players playing for england, my biggest concern with england is the return of our players without injury.
So no, i have no 'bitterness' or any general feeling about england not qualifying. You'd be wrong about that...among other things.
As for Greece, they played 6 games and fluked their way to winning euro 2004, they're not remotely one of the 'best sides in europe', there's at least 8 countries who are stronger. Same as when Denmark won in 1992, they werent one of the best, they just got the rub of the green and fluked it. Greece did the same, via slightly more boring tactics.
I have no reason to be anti greece, i'm completely indifferent to them, i dont have a problem with greece, i just know they're not one of europe's top sides.
Italy, Germany, France, Holland, Portugal, Spain, Croatia, England, Czech Republic are all better than Greece.
As for who'd be the favourites - what does that matter?
Put it this way, England had one of their worst ever campaigns and missed out by 1 point. For them, not qualifying is a disaster. For greece, it's almost habitual.

Habits don't and shouldn't matter. What matters is the here and now. And currently Greece are a better side than England. Whether they "fluked" it or not. They're better. They qualified for the next tournament. They've beaten all the top sides in Europe. Almost everything they've done over the past 4 years has been better than England. I'm sure all their results have been flukes and all Englands have been "unfortunate". And England should be top seeds, based on the DJ's "but they won the World Cup in '66" ratings rather than UEFA's current form ratings.
I'm bored now. It's a silly argument. It's obvious Greece deserve to be where they are on current form. That should be the end of the discussion.
