I think DJS looks at a team like Greece and because he doesnt recognise many of their players he assumes they must be an inferior team to the likes of England etc who do have players he has heard of. News to you mate, a better set of players does not necessarily make a better team.

That's because the tournament is only held every FOUR years.
Everyone knows the holders are seeds for the next tournament. It's always been that way. And it's fair, because they were the last team to win it.

It doesn't matter how good they are, they have earned the right - on the pitch - to be seeds for this tournament. IMO, you're being unnecessarily hard on Greece because they don't play the brand of football you like.

Can you not accept that there is a persuasive footballing argument for them to be seeds as they are holders? I bet if Portugal had won the final in 2004, you'd have no problems with them as seeds.

Why focus on Greece and not Austria and Switzerland?
Their choice as seeds is purely logistical...

No i dont agree about greece being any good, or being seeded (neither do i about austria and switzerland). Some of you obviously rate greece as some kind of footballing giant. I find it bizarre and deluded, but it's your opinion so it's upto you if you think that. I can accept your view, but i disagree with it.

No, i look at greece having failed to get to the last world cup and having only ever done well at ONE major tournement.

To me, that isnt a footballing superpower. Maybe to you it is. Fair enough.

I'm amazed at the way you spin this DJS. It's not a case of you being pig-headed and stubborn, it's actually everyone else! All we've said on this thread is that Greece deserve to be seeded as the current Europan champions and a team that has qualified for this tournament at a canter. But in your language what that means is that we hold a "bizarre and deluded" belief that "Greece is some kind of footballing giant".

The way you twist what other people say to make their arguments look ridiculous and make yours seem sound - Forget football mate, take up politics instead.

Very clever DJS, if anyone came into this thread and just read a couple of posts they'd think I was the "oaf" (to use one of the several terms you've previously used to describe me), arguing the ridiculous that Greece is a footballing superpower.

You've argued that Greece shouldn't be one of the top seeds in the Euro. On the basis that they won the tournmanent 4 years ago, it's a far gone measure to use to rank a team now, so I can see your point. They have qualified for this tournament with ease, with games and points to spare and have been quite imprssive in doing so, so they have that in their favour but whatever. You could go on to argue that success in the previous tournament should give them some kind of reward going into this one, as it has tended to do for previous winners of tournaments (eg by being top seeds or qualifying automatically etc) but again we won't go into that.

Seeing as this thread is really about the World Cup draw though and that you intially said that draw was a joke becasue a joke team like Greece was seeded first, I am curious to know which of the second or third seeded teams in the World Cup qualifying draw you think deserve to be seeded above the reigning European Champions.

No. I don't see and please stop condescending to me.
The top seeds are MEANT to be the teams who are in form.

Superpowers in European football will not change for generations.
They will always be the likes of Italy, Germany etc. - who have a tradition of winning tournaments, have the richest leagues....this equates to power.

A high seeding is a reward for any countries who are in form and continually producing good performances at the present. Greece are in form, and therefore earn their seeding.

Superpower v seeding is like climate v weather.
