In terms of Maradonna v Pele there are so many reason to choose Pele.

Pele stood out in a Brazilian team/generation that was far and away the best team in the world. 3 out of 4 world cups, the only SA team to win in Europe, and Pele was the star player.

Maradonna did it in a team of journeymen, so it's a bit easier to stand out.

On balance I'd say it's an impossible comparrison because they played at times where the technology and conditions were so different, but Pele stands out for me

Maradonna was a cheat, not just once but in USA 94 too.

I think it's truly ludicrous that Maradona has received so many more votes than Pele.

It is but if we asked everyone for LFC's greatest striker Torres would probably get more votes than Sir Roger. These polls are always biased.

Pele by a country mile. When Peele played there was an almost magical qaul;ity to hsi play. Maradonna was good but not even in the same class as Pele in any department.

                That is all

I can't possibly comment on the great players who peaked before I saw them and in general played football in an era when I have little understanding of the age or the relative quality of other teams and individuals. From what I have seen of Pele he was clearly a supreme player but I haven't seen anywhere near enough to say if he is better than the players I have watched during my lifetime or have a better knowledge of the era like Zidane or Marradona. Those two are the two standouts players of the era in which I have watched football.

The relative qualities of players like Pele, Finney, Matthews, Pushkas, Di Stefano etc. I really couldn't say. However most of these players have remained statesmen within the game in stark contrast to Maradonna and so if one was looking for a role model their success and quality as people would put them in a higher league.

Also worthy of a mention is Paulo Maldini in my opinion. I know it's not fashionable to mention defenders in these sort of discussions but for me over the last two decades he has been head and shoulders above almost every other one on the planet.

Absolutely agree - he's a hero. Not just for his footballing ability, but also for the way he conducts himself, and the amazing one-club career he's had.
I first saw him play live in about 1998 in the San Siro, and I remember coming back from Milan being proud that I could tell my grandchildren that I had seen Maldini play. A true footballing legend-

                          Maradonna only a bullrunner?!

Baffling...do watch some videos of his passing game and see what you think of that.
