    L-plate lesson for Giles

Paul Jewell has conned Derby starlet Giles Barnes out of £100 in a bid to stop the highly-rated England kid being suckered into a big-money move in January.

Rams boss Jewell is determined to hang on to the Under-21 international - despite interest from West Ham and Spurs.

And Jewell handed out a training ground lesson to show the midfielder just how much he still has to learn in the game.

"I raced him for £100 and he lost," said Jewell. "I had to say 'listen Giles, this is where you have to learn the game'. I told him I would give him a 20-yard start in a race over 100 yards. I did not say I would beat him. I said I would race him for £100 - so he has to pay up."

Barnes, 19, has only started a handful of Premier League games after breaking his foot in Derby's play-off final win at Wembley.

"I have seen players go for the money and get lost. There was a kid at Bradford called Graeme Tomlinson, who was 17 when he went to Man United," added Jewell.

"I asked him why he was going there. I knew why - it's Manchester United and the trimmings and all that goes with it, but he was never sighted."

Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

There is only ONE Barnes, and it ain't Giles.

Jewell is right he needs more games to develop. At least now he has a manager who while a stylistic pragmatist does appreciate skillful players.
