United contact Tottenham over out-of-favour striker Defoe
Last updated at 11:09am on 31st December 2007
Manchester United want to sign Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe and will use defender Wes Brown and the offer of £10million as bait to get their man.
It is understood United chief executive David Gill has rung Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy to ask if the England international is for sale.
Defoe has 18 months left on his contract and even though he insists he wants to stay at the club, he has yet to sign a new deal.
Levy, who is also facing a fight to keep striker Dimitar Berbatov after the player's agent claimed he wanted to quit the club, is concerned Defoe could emulate former Tottenham defender Sol Campbell by letting his contract run down and then leave on a free transfer.
United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, a big admirer of Defoe, is looking to sign another forward due to concerns over Louis Saha's fitness.
Much of the talk has been of United wanting Berbatov, who scored four goals in the 6-4 win over Reading on Saturday, during the transfer window.
But it is believed the Bulgaria international will stay until the end of the season, despite his agent Emil Dantchev claiming the striker wants to leave White Hart Lane.
He is today reported to have said: "I have already spoken to the Tottenham chairman, Daniel Levy, and told him that if a club that correspond to Dimitar's class and ambition come in with an offer that suits his current club in January, he would like to be allowed to go.
"Two clubs outside of England and one from the Premier League are interested in him."
Levy has put out a statement insisting the club are not looking to sell their star players. He said: "Once again for the record, we are not a selling club, rather we are building for the future. When we have players on long contracts, we have no need to entertain offers."
But the latter does not apply to Defoe and an offer of £10m will tempt Levy to cash in on the 25-year-old, with England defender Brown - who has refused to sign a new four-year deal at Old Trafford - possibly going the other way.
Spurs manager Juande Ramos is looking to sign two defenders and scouts from the club were at Ajax's game at Venlo yesterday to watch Urby Emanuelson in action.
Spurs, who have already had a £5.5m bid turned down, see him as a good addition to the squad, especially amid fears that Gareth Bale is struggling to return before the end of the season due to a foot injury.
According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

Exclusive: £10m Nicolas Anelka to Chelsea
Nicolas Anelka could be on his way to Stamford Bridge
Oliver Kay and Matt Hughes
Chelsea are close to making their first significant acquisition of the new transfer window, having entered formal negotiations with Bolton Wanderers over a £10 million deal to take Nicolas Anelka to Stamford Bridge. The approach was made before the new buying season opened at midnight last night, with Peter Kenyon, the Chelsea chief executive, beginning talks with Phil Gartside, the Bolton chairman, over the weekend.
Discussions continued yesterday, with all parties confident that a deal will be finalised by the end of next week. Anelka has been kept informed of developments and is understood to be in little doubt that his appearance against Derby County tomorrow will be his last for Bolton.
Manchester United had also shown interest in the 28-year-old France forward, having made an informal inquiry to Bolton in May, but Sir Alex Ferguson is more eager to pursue Dimitar Berbatov, who is unsettled at Tottenham Hotspur. Emil Dantchev, Berbatov’s agent, is understood to have been referring to United and Chelsea when he stated yesterday that the Bulgaria forward plans to join “a club that corresponds to Dimitar’s class and ambition”.
United’s hopes of signing him this month are unclear, with a summer deal preferable from a financial view-point, but The Times has learnt that contact was made with Tottenham at boardroom level four weeks ago.
While Berbatov is likely to stay put this month, Anelka’s move to Chelsea seems certain to go through. Gary Megson, the Bolton manager, has reluctantly agreed to sell to raise funds to reinforce his squad and is unlikely to play him in the FA Cup third-round tie at home to Sheffield United on Saturday. Chelsea will be Anelka’s eighth club in a career that has taken him to Arsenal, Real Madrid and Liverpool, to name but three.
The acquisition of Anelka is regarded as essential by Avram Grant, the Chelsea first-team coach, not only to cover the absence of Didier Drogba, who will depart to play for Ivory Coast in the African Cup of Nations as soon as he recovers from a knee injury, but also to provide much-needed fire-power in the longer term. Unlike last January, when José Mourinho was denied funds to sign defensive reinforcements, Roman Abramovich, the Chelsea owner, has promised to back Grant in the transfer market, with Anelka likely to be followed by at least one other signing.
Grant did his best to keep his cards close to his chest yesterday. “When we have news, we will tell you,” he said. “Our options are open. We don’t want to bring players in only for the next few months because of problems we have at the moment. We’re looking more long term than that.”
Real test United's resolve and prepare £45m bid for Ronaldo
Last updated at 09:18am on 1st January 2008
Real Madrid aim to once again test Manchester United's resolve to keep Cristiano Ronaldo after it emerged they were prepared to pay £45million for the striker.
The Spanish club's president Ramon Calderon revealed his desire to land Ronaldo after failing to do so once before when the 22-year-old snubbed him to sign a new five-year deal at Old Trafford.
United are certain to turn down any offer, but Real see Ronaldo as the player to return them to Champions League glory.
Calderon told the Daily Mirror: "Who wouldn't want to have in his team a player of Cristiano Ronaldo's amazing talent? He is one of the best in the world."
They have been encouraged by the Portugal star's recent admission that he wants to play in Spain while still at his peak.
A fortnight ago, at FIFA's World Player of the Year gala in Zurich, Ronaldo told Mirror Sport he longed to experience La Liga - despite signing a contract extension in March to become the highest-paid player in United's history on £120,000 a week.
"I've said on many occasions I'd like to play in Spain," he said. "It's a fantastic league, very attractive, where they play a beautiful game.
"It's my dream to play in Spain. Whether or not it will happen, I don't know. Sometimes I want something but it's not possible.
"Only God knows what will happen in the future. I'd like to find out the difference between playing in England and Spain."
United are adamant they will reject Real's advances. But with the Spaniards said to be ready to increase their bid if necessary, the Old Trafford board may have a tough decision to make come the summer.
Real's No.1 target had been AC Milan's Brazil star Kaka, but they believe they have a better chance of luring Ronaldo.
United would be ****ed without Ronaldo, even if they had £80mil to spend as a result of his sale.
"Let me say for the record, I am not a gangster and never have been. Im not the thief who grabs your purse. Im not the guy who jacks your car. Im not down with the people who steal and hurt others. Im just a brother who fight back."
