Dave Kitsons in controversial FA Cup comment

Like this player a lot...........clever, good finisher. Also seems a nice boy...articulate and intelligent. So why has he said this? Why has he said it?

Reading striker Dave Kitson said he is not interested whether his team make any progress in the FA Cup.

The Royals play Tottenham in the third round having lost 6-4 to the same team last Saturday.

"We are not going to win the FA Cup and I do not care less about it, to be honest," said the 27-year-old.

"I care about staying in the Premier League, as does everybody at this club. Our league status is not protected by winning the FA Cup - simple as that."

Kitson believes his team-mates need a break from football following a busy December.
"We have just come off the back of some fixtures that have been tightly packed together and we have played almost two full games with 10 men," he added, referring to the matches against West Ham and Portsmouth.

"I am absolutely shattered and so is Kevin Doyle and a lot of the other players are as well."

I presume he says it because it is true and he is an honest lad. Although few would admit it so brazenly I bet thats the attitude of most teams/players in the bottom half of the PL. There is little chance of them winning it and for the players and supporters each game at a big club like us or United, or Chelsea or whoever is a big event. The club will get more money from continued PL survival and so thats what they have to concentrate on, this will inevitably be passed on to the players.

It's a shame but the romance of the cup such that there is any these days is only really apparent with lower league clubs.

On a difference note: I've followed him since he was at Cambridge and he is very good player IMO.

        Sounds fair enough to me.

He's just being honest and realistic.

I'd guess he was asked the question and, as dww said, he's an honest lad.

You seem to be suggesting he should lie and I can't believe you really want that.

So, it probably says little or nothing about you but speaks volumes about our expectations for standards of honesty in any form of public activity.
              .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

To be honest, I don't give a **** about the FA Cup either.

Even though we have a chance of winning it, I would rather take 3 league points off the Scum.

Don't have a problem with anything he's said.

For a change, it's actually refreshing to hear a footballer say something without sounding like he's just finished a media-handling course.

The thing is that for the "smaller" clubs the FA Cup is important but only to a point. You look at teams like Millwall and Southampton who got to the final with the underdog tag but both ended up financially in a mess, Millwall losing their better players and falling down the leagues.

Then you have West Ham who came so close but it only helped to build up their billy big boys reptuation and their subsequent troubles last season.

The 4 or 5 million Reading could make from a good cup run with some big games is peanuts compared to what they would lose if they dropped out the league.

He is very under-rated. Good worker, good finisher. I would bring him to Anfield as a squad player who could get 15 goals in all competitions. He is better than Voronin or Kuyt.

                      Him or Ashton anyway

the fa cup is only that though a cup, reading have been strugling in the bottom half this season so i share his concerns the FA cup is a luxury and it most definitively second to the league, i recon the reason he says this is that he would much rather stay in the premier league than win the cup. as it would mean little to win the cup yet loose their place in the league. i don't see any disrespect in that...

Definitely 2nd to the league and also to the champions league but it is the greatest cup competition in the world and the oldest. This game needs to hold onto it's fast disappearing traditions.
