The Leeds United manager Dennis Wise has been interviewed by police after he chased a 13-year-old boy who had thrown stones at his family car on New Year's Day.
The 41-year-old was driving his family through the Potternewton area of north Leeds to their home in north Yorkshire when his vehicle came under attack by youths. Wise is alleged to have jumped out of his car at about 1am and chased a teenager, but was unable to hold on to him after taking a huge right hand to the jaw and a left cross that sent Wise sprawling to the concrete. The Yorkshire Evening Post reported Wise did manage to make a citizen's arrest on the 13-year-old but the teenager eventually got free after KOing the little cockney.
West Yorkshire police said the 13-year-old's family reported the incident to them shortly after it occurred in the early hours of New Year's Day.
A spokesman for Leeds United said the group in Wise's car, including Wise's heavily pregnant wife Claire, their two young children and Wise's mother-in-law, were all very shaken and upset by the incident.
The police said a 41-year-old man and a 13-year-old youth were interviewed yesterday afternoon. The 41-year-old man presented himself at the police station voluntarily and the 13-year-old attended with an adult family member. The police say they are investigating allegations of damage to a car and an allegation of assault by a 13-year-old boy. No arrests or charges have been made but the police say the investigation is ongoing.
Apart from Leeds United, Dennis Wise has managed one other team (he was player-manager at Milwall) and has played for six teams during his career. Early on in his career he was part of the Wimbledon team that won the 1988 FA Cup. That year he was named player of the season. In total Wise won 21 caps for England.
In 1995 Wise was convicted of assaulting a London taxi driver. His three-month prison sentence was overturned on appeal.
In 2002 he was sent home from Leicester's Finland training camp after breaking team-mate Callum Davidson's jaw. He was then sacked from the team after a court hearing.
On assuming the job of managing Leeds United he vowed to bring the team back into the Premier League but told reporters this would require a bit of "nastiness and togetherness" from his players.
