One in twenty people around the world is a Manc

Well, I say 'is a Manc' but they probably own a fake 1999 shirt with SHARPS on the front and BEKHAM on the back.

    Man Utd's 333M fans

Manchester United will this week claim to be the best-supported club in the world with a staggering third of a billion fans.

The Reds (stop calling them that you *******s) say they have enough followers in all four corners of the globe to fill Old Trafford 4,380 times over - yet boss Alex Ferguson last week complained the crowd failed to get behind the team at home.

Their army of 333,000,000 is greater than the population of most countries, including the USA. With an estimated global population of 6.6billion, one in 20 of the planet's inhabitants follow United.

The statistics come from a poll conducted by TNS Sport and will be released later this week along with the club's financial results, which are expected to show a record turnover of £245million, restoring United to their position as Britain's wealthiest club.

Arsenal's turnover was £201m and Chelsea's is expected to be about the same.

Tns base their fan figure on interviews conducted with 1,000 people in 21 countries. It shows a huge jump in support for the club in just a few years. A 2003 MORI survey put the total at 75million.

Trading figures for the 12 months to June 30 are expected to show turnover up 21 per cent and profits from their title-winning campaign of about £75m.

The world's richest club are Real Madrid, who in September reported a turnover of £263m.

So they mainly asked the people with scum tops on then. Not eactly a far reaching survey, 1000 people in 21 contries, thats 47 people a country and then multiplied up to get 6.6 billion, this means they had to multiply their results by 6,600,000. So this means of the 1000 people only 50.4545454(?), basically 50 people said they supported utd, very limited. Have to say seeing as the world population only hit 6 billion a few years ago this is a big jump.
So most people hey asked in asia could have said yes and then nearly everyone after that said they didn't support utd.

I say it is pretty difficult to prove a study like this across the world. How can you measure how many people support a club? Hits on the official site? Filling out a form? It seems flawed. The only way I can think they can carry studies like this is that they have a sample area and ask who supports who and generalise across the world which doesn't give a true figure. For all I know, this could have been asked in Trafford on match day...

All surveys serve the purpose of the company paying for the service.

Which coincides with the stadium noise survey. Surely Anfield and Old Toilet are more noisier than Stamford Bridge? Pretty bad surveys.

Also would like to add, according to the same people who did this study. After we won the Champions League, our support was meant to have quadrupled whilst the Scum and Arsenal's support had decreased.

All of this is highly hypothetical to me anyway mate. It's impossible to tell which club is best supported. It could be a number of things, not just merchandise sales, as some countries are third world countries and people don't have money to buy original replicas etc ...

These surveys is just a marketing / branding exercise in my opinion.

but our website gets more hits constantly than any others and surely thats a better indication of support, than picking a number and doubling it then times it by a million
