Sir Alex Ferguson believes the Irish footballing public will have to show incoming Republic of Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni some patience as he looks to nurture the precocious youngsters available to him.
The Manchester United manager has backed the appointment of the former Juventus and Inter coach but has warned the FAI that a successful track record doesn’t guarantee success.
“They have really gone for the top in terms of experience and his CV – which was outstanding,” Ferguson told The Irish Star.
“But that is no guarantee because you have got to have a nucleus of decent players to work with.”
However, despite citing the Irish side’s youthful complexion, the average age of the team that took the field against Brazil in Croke Park last month was 27 as caretaker boss Don Givens selected an almost full strength Irish XI.
“I think obviously there was a spell where Irish football was in a really strong position. The present squad seems to be too young.
“So to be given time to develop those younger players together through as a group will be a patient job.”
