In relation to Alliadier's red and subsequent appeal it's a farce but it will only serve to devalue the game if we keep seeing red cards like these banded about.

    I can't wait to see Boro's reaction.

I don't think Middlesbrough have a leg to stand on. Alliadiere hit Mascherano in the face. That's a red card.

Middlesbrough's appeal cannot have denied that so I can see it how was called 'frivolous'.

Don't forget the concept of 'frivolous appeals' was to counter the abuse of the appeals process by which clubs were choosing which matches the player would miss for a ban since the appeal put back the starting date of the ban. I think it wasn't really necessary to increase Alliadiere's ban on this occasion but I can see why it was done.

What all these comparisons between the Lampard and Griffin (the Stoke player who was wrongly sent off too) cases and Alliadiere's failed appeal really amount to is an attempt by the media to polarise the issue and spark a big furore in order to fill airtime and space in newspapers and improve viewing/readership figures.
      .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

That's a very loose use of the word 'hit.' That ref also said he saw the whole incident, so if Alliadier's was a red card, what about Mascher 'hitting' Alliadiere first? That point alone would make any appeal not frivolous in my eyes as both players have been treated differently.

My main point would be that Mascher and Alliadiere should have been given a yellow as should Boa Morte and Rik, get on with the games and all this farce could have been avoided.

I agree that it probably wasn't a red card, but a tackle by Makele in the same game should have been.... Don't suppose Chelsea will be contesting the lack of red card for him!

I don't disagree with your second paragraph. It would have been better if things had been done as you say.

However it wasn't so starting from where things were I can understand why they didn't let Alliadiere off the hook and I can understand why they increased the ban. OK, it was hardly a right hook but slapping is hitting.

I don't know whether they could have booked Mascherano in hindsight but it gets silly when the appeals process ends up looking at every single incident. It wasn't worthy of a red so why worry, it's just one of those things.

The refs both admitted they'd got the Lampard and Griffin decisions wrong. Whether the ref for the Chelsea game saw the rake by Lampard I don't know but if he had and didn't take action at the time then I don't think the appeals panel could have overruled him and made it a yellow for that while no red for the slightest push on Boa Morte's shoulder.

I agree Boa Morte deserved a yellow too but the same applies as for Lampard and Mascherano.

Anyway, I don't like the ref that did the Chelsea game. He looks odd.

            Then again, they all do.

I agree withi most of that but I just don't like to see Chelsea getting the rub of any green.

I also think that Boro have a right to feel hard done by, I really think the extra game ban was harsh but they'll get over it.

Yep. He looks like a seedy weirdo. Peter Walton. Don't like him at all, mainly based on his face and hair.

                  Fat Frank walks free.
                  FA have cleared him.
No double standard here, the FA is consistent in its incompetence.

I agree the Alliadiere thing was marginal.

                      Terrible of us really.

Still, he is a referee so it's what he deserves.

Well, Reina had to sit out a three game ban for the same thing when he softly pushed Robben.
Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

I was just flicking through the TV guide and saw that on Chelsea TV tonight is a programme called 'Frank Lampard: Ton up'. It's nice to see that fatty's finally starting to be honest about his weight problem.
