    Jewell

Before he took the Derby job there was a lot of talk of Jewell coming in as an assistant for us on here. I have previously always liked him but his stint at Derby has been pretty terrible - I know they were crap and in a hopeless position when he arrived but they have got worse and he came in and said they were crap and doomed and the players now seem completely demoralised. If I was a Derby fan I would be fuming that they don't even appear to go out to win or entertain - it must be pretty grim to watch. The fact he hasn't even injected any pride into the team or seemingly built anything for next season makes me suspect he might not be as good as I thought he was.

I agree with you. I've always thought highly of him, but given how Derby seem to go from bad to worse, I imagine a lot of people are now revising their opinions of Jewell. Remember, he flopped at Sheff Wed as well

I think he was quite pragmatic about the situation, I think it'll be a lot different next season, lets see how he does when he gets some cash and if he can get them out of the championship.

I can see what you are saying but I think the defeatist attitude he adopted this year has to make it harder to motivate players and make them believe they are good enough next year - added to the fact that it is hardly a great advert for new players to want to come to Derby (especially as the sacking of Billy Davis already made the club look less than stable).

I just thin the way they Derby seem to go out ready to loose with no pride in playing would be absolutely unbearable if you were a fan. The supporters of almost any team deserve more than what their players have been giving the Derby fans and IMO Jewell has only made them seem more feckless and sorry for themselves.

It is probably too early to judge but I really think that the way he has handled things has been pretty depressing.

Nearly pulled off a shock but the one man show done it agen for the scum

I agree though, Jewell attitude has been all wrong from the start. Plus if they played Miller and Earnshaw upfront everygame they might actually have scored a few goals.

Derby were relegated before they even kicked a ball, that team could never have competed. However when Jewell came in he should have done all he could to raise them morale and tell them they had a chance even when they never really

I must say I didnt think it was a great idea to sack Billy davies, just what were the boards ambitions this season!
As for Jewell, I think he cut through the bull****, they all knew that they were going to be favourites for relegation, they have shown **** all ambition this season, ok, any team can motivate themselves to play Utd/LFC etc but its the games with their fellow relegation threatened teams where they have come unstuck. Whether jewell was in charge or if he said that they could do it would not have made one jot of difference.

I know Paul pretty well, he lived in Baildon near me for many years. He got his first break by Geoffrey Richmond a Bradford millionaire who invested, gambled and did a mini Leeds. Jagger was an average player at best when at Bradford City. Sheffield Wednesday poached him, had no money subsequently made no progress. Jagger is a good manager when he has decent players around him and some money. He is also very honest and calls a spade a spade. He would be an ideal number two in a big club, he is a motivator and does not suffer fools and lazy players gladly. At Derby he recognised that they were a very poor squad immediately and made no secret of the fact. He will bring Derby back up next year because Adam Pearson is prepared to spend some cash.

He's hardly called them all rubbish.

What he told them when he came in was something like: "Let's be realsitic, we are probably not going to stay up. But if you still want to be here next season then I suggest you show a good mentality and get stuck in for the full 90 minutes".

Nothing wrong with that for me. There's no point teling the players they're good enough when they obviously aren't. They are bottom because of their lack of ability in all areas, not because they are low on confidence.

If they keep the majority of their players they'll no doubt challenge for promotion next year.

It has surprised me that he hasn't managed to turn Derby around. I didn't expect him to save them from relagation but if hasn't picked up any wins and they don't really look like they are going to.

The jury is most definatley out and I am guessing this time next year we will have a better idea about Paul Jewell the manager.
