well they are about the same age, similar type of striker who have scored a decent amount of goals for mid sized club (ok I know Atletico may take some offence to that but they have slipped down the ranks for a few years now) when we signed Torres a few poeple were not convinced and questions were asked about the fee. If Bent had gone on to have the success Torres had then no one would have questioned his fee.

Equally who would you rather for <£3m Rochembach or Bullard. To pick out one premium end transfer (where both fees are debatable - Torres I've seen quoted as high as £28m and Bent's full fee is dependent to a limited degree on performance I have heard) and claim it is fully representative. Some British talent is over rated (particularly young players and forwards) but Aaron Lennon when he went for around £1m to Spurs would have been good value for any number of clubs here or abroad.

I have a linked question:

If there is no law stating a club has to have a certain quota of UK eligible player; Why are British players more expensive than a comparatively skilled Player from outside of the UK?

I mean there is no onus on any club to have them so why do the selling clubs always feel they can command a higher fee?

Through me the way that runs among the lost.

My maker was divine authority,
The highest wisdom, and the primal love.
Before me nothing but eternal things were made,
And I endure eternally.
Abandon every hope, ye who enter here."

There is a general feeling (stronger at middle clubs) that having an English spine is important - it is certainly good in terms of PR for a lot of supporter bases - therefore teams are willing to pay a premium for English players. As some players attract a large fee all chairmen (not unreasonably) feel a similar player should attract a similar fee.

Also there is always a premium for transfers between rivals which adds to the impression in a lot of cases.

On top of that there is the feeling that English players are already adapted to our style of football (which is true). Foreign players who have merely done alright often head home and as most leagues are less well off than the PL that decreases their seeming value, whereas english players tend to want to stay in the UK where teams can afford to pay more.

but Woodgate barely played for them and was voted their worst ever player and Owen, well he had the amazing honur of scoring more goals per min than anyone else. He had limited success there and was shipped out for a massive fee.
As for Beckham, he had his moments and did well to a degree, but no where near the success and form he had at Utd.

Although I must say, macca did very very well at real, despite the politics there which almost drove him out.
