Suprise suprise... Lehmann mouths off again

Out-of-favour goalkeeper Jens Lehmann claims he could have prevented Arsenal going out of the Champions League - if only he had been given the chance.

In German magazine Kicker, Lehmann, 38, hit out at manager Arsene Wenger and first-choice keeper Manuel Almunia, 30, after the defeat by Liverpool.

"For me it is a tragedy since I did not have a chance to prevent it," he said.

"I stayed here to win the competition and saw good chances to play but I've not had them. It makes me very angry."

During the Bundesliga's winter break, the German number one rejected a return to Borussia Dortmund in an effort to regain his starting place with the Gunners.

But this has not happened and Lehmann is concerned that a lack of first-team action could cost him any chance of playing at Euro 2008.

"To be sitting on the bench behind somebody who only started to play when he was 30 is not funny," he added. "I am very angry."

He also laid into Wenger over his handling of the situation.

"If the coach had spoken to me before the start of the season then I would have been able to decide if I wanted to sit on the bench," he stated.

"He has a different opinion and I don't really believe he can be happy with it."

They should publish a book of Lehmann's outbursts - would be an entertaining read

Think he's partly right tho...not that he would have kept Arsenal in the CL, but he is a better keeper than Almunia but Wenger is too stubborn to admit that he's ballsed up and will keep Almunia in goal.

You've got to ask why Wenger still has this guy round the place though as these sort of rants are nothing new for him. I can't see Rafa or Ferguson keeping a mouthy little arse like him.

I think in some ways that is true but the problem is Lehmans instability and unpredictability. Almunia may be a less outstanding keeper but he works better in the context of their defense.

Lehman has always been exceptionally talented but he must be the most yellow carded keeper in PL history and frequently for no discernible reason goes mental. One thing I always like to see in a keeper is calmness and authority. I think his lack of the former erodes the faith the players ahead of him can have in the latter.

Funny that, how he's conveniently forgotten he cocked up their chance in the only european final they reached. What a guy.

The thing is he may have a slight point, it's hard to say.

Almunia isn't a great keeper, however he is very steady. Lehmann does pull off class saves and looks fantastic at times. The problem is, he is too inconsistant and prone to regular howlers. He's got a poor disciplinary record too which I'm sure unsettles the defence.

Obviously not much of a 'team player', must be a horrid atmosphere training with him. Hasn't done himself many favours with these regular outbursts either - I know Wenger hasn't mentioned them but he can't be too chuffed.

                        Fools!!

Trying to figure out exactly which goals in the tie were Almunia's fault...

Kuyt bundles in from a yard out after an amazing Gerro run...unstoppable header from Sami... audacious blast from Torres... penalty (which Almunia guessed right on)... one on one with Babel...

                            Strange bloke, Lehmann.

Reading these quotes in the press, and watching his behaviour on a football pitch, he comes across as a complete ******.

Anyone ever seen him interviewed on TV? Completely different kettle of fish. Amiable, really laid back and very personable indeed.

WTF does he mean by Almunia starting playing at 30? Does he mean literally or in earnest at the highest level?
Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’

                              Completely agree.

I remember seeing him on Sky once being interviewed and he came across really calm, really relaxed and quiet - a stark contrast to these outbursts & his actions on the pitch.

I think re Almunia playing at 30 - I guess he means at the highest level. I'm sure before Almunia joined Arsenal he'd only ever had a handfull of appearances at small clubs in the Spanish League. I think anyway...
