Ipswich Town defender David Wright says he has no intention of taking it easy over the summer in preparation for a potentially gruelling pre-season.

The squad will embark on a 13-match schedule - including a week’s tour of Northern Ireland - to ensure they are in peak condition for the start of the new Championship season on August 9.

“Each one of us has a meeting at the end of the season and we get a programme from the fitness conditioner Simon (Thadani),” said Wright, touted as a possible successor to Jason De Vos as club captain.
“This will be my 13th pre-season so I’ve done quite a few now and I know how fit I like to be when I come back. I follow Simon’s programme but I also do my own kind of thing to make sure I’m ready. I personally like to do a lot of cycling to keep the fitness up but I will be playing a bit of golf as well. I’ve also got to do a bit of stomach work as well as I’ve had a slight niggle there and I need to keep it strong.”
The end of the season was greeted with relief by several Ipswich players who were carrying knocks towards the end of the season as the club tried - but ultimately failed, to reach the play-offs. David Norris (heel) and Richard Naylor (neck) are recovering well after surgery and both should be ready for the start of pre-season training, while the break gives Velice Sumulikoski’s torn artery in his shin the chance to heal properly.
“As soon as the season finishes everyone shuts down for a bit as I would say 95 per cent of the squad were carrying something,” added Wright. “It gives players like David Norris and Bam Bam (Naylor) a chance to recover from their operations, and the other boys will have appreciated the rest. It takes the body a week or so just to recuperate and then you just start ticking over with different things. Then once June comes around everyone will be stepping it up as you need to start building up your stamina again."
