Gunners boss wants teams rewarded for positive football

Wenger: Wants attacking football
They tried it in France whereby teams who scored three goals earned an extra point, but it didn't work.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger feels a bonus points system would encourage teams to play positive football.
The French tactician is disappointed when he sees teams surge into leads only to sit back and defend their advantage.
Wenger feels that if extra points were on offer, then it would encourage teams to continue to attack and make games more exciting.
"I can see a system working whereby the difference between goals scored and conceded earns you extra points," said Wenger.
"That would mean that, if a team was leading 3-0, they would still be encouraged to go on and try to score more goals in case their opponent pulled one back, and it would encourage the losing team to try to close the gap.
"It would stop a team who was leading one or two nil from sitting on their lead.
"That would be better than just awarding a team a bonus for scoring a certain number of goals - they tried it in France whereby teams who scored three goals earned an extra point, but it didn't work.
"This way the game would become more exciting and I feel the leading clubs have a responsibility to play positive football."
Are people really that opposed to thinking about trying to encourage more attractive football? This bonus points plan is not an idea I'm a big fan of but I don't see why Wenger suggesting it deserves such abuse. He is clearly a football aesthete and wants a more entertaining game - which is in many ways a hard to argue with goal.

I am with you... Don't like the model suggested by wenger, but if a good incentive to get more teams playing attractive football, I am all for it. The problem with that model is basically that it would allow the top-4 to dominate the league even more.
I know they in france give out price money to the the team that has the highest goal pr game ratio. But the money are not big enough to give it serious consideration for teams atm...
Perhaps the league cup should be abandoned and give the extra uefa place to the most attractive playing team in the league, and that way all teams could have an incentive to score more goals. If it's a top-4 team that wins it, the uefa spot would go down to the next highest on the list and so on...

It depends whether you see football as a game that is all about attacking. IMO defending takes just as much skill as attacking so you're basically punishing a team that plays to their strenghts. It may not be as pleasing on the eye but great defending is an aspect of the game that shouldn't be overlooked.
We'd also see the top 4 getting bonus points regularly against the lower placed sides making the gap between 4th and the rest even bigger. When you look at the success of the Premier League and the success of the game in general in recent times I don't think any such system is needed and it's clear that Wenger only thinks that way because he believes it would benefit his team.

agreed - if it makes games more exciting to watch then it's worth a look.
