    Platini speaks

Michel Platini has questioned the motives behind the foreign investors infiltrating English football. The Uefa president believes the Premier League, more than any other domestic division, has succumbed to the win-at-all-costs mentality.

The Frenchman feels that the money currently awash in the English top flight is detrimental to the national team, and gives certain clubs an unfair advantage over their rivals. Following a season which saw the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool dominate the UEFA Champions League, England's absence from Euro 2008 would appear to be a direct result of foreign invasion, both on and off the field.

Platini is convinced that the growing trend of clubs buying success will continue to hold Fabio Capello's men back, and is something which Uefa must do their utmost to eradicate. "I can't say that we will miss the England team (at Euro 2008)," he told L'Equipe. "That would mean that we believe Croatia are a poor team. It is their own problem that England cannot finish among the top two places in a group of six teams. Football at club level is completely different to the international game. Except for Italy and Germany, the winners or finalists at the last two World Cups have been countries that export their players. I am very concerned by the buying of clubs by foreign investors. I can't see why Americans want to invest in these clubs, except to make them into a money-making product.

"It is a never-ending search for money, leading to the proposal of a 39th fixture abroad. The aim is not to win titles, but to pay back debts. Look at Chelsea and Manchester United's debt problems. Fifa and Uefa have to fight against that, because today the ones who cheat are going on to win. Is Champions League success based on who has the most money? I think so, and that bothers me. We have to find ways to help other clubs sort out their problems. Defeat must no longer mean financial disaster."

How weird is that Ben, I was just about to post this exact thread!!

Anyways, what a total tosser Platini is. Jealous ******* just seems hellbent on trying to destroy the EPL. Arrogant ******* should never have been allowed to become UEFA top dog.

IMO, (expect some schtick) Abramovich should have bought Liverpool. I know he wanted a team in the capital but you're telling me that Liverpool would have been as much debt if he would have bought us? With our fan base, we would have clocked up a lot of merchandise providing we would have won the league and also getting rid of Parry, of course.

him and blatter seem determined to railroad english football into major changes just so that others can profit. i am growing to detest the man.
there was no issue when spanish or italian clubs were dominant, and to say that hooliganism is still a major problem in english football is ludicrous. italian and french teams have far worse problems, as well as far more widespread racism in italy and spain along with some places in eastern europe

He does have a point, but then Barca supposedley have a £23.5M deal for Alves, a WING BACK!

It's not as though the other top clubs can't compete is it?

I agree with the asshole bit.

He's just a jealous cuntbag. The froggies league isn't popular and doesn't have popular global appeal as compared to the EPL. I would go as far as to say that the EPL has the largest global following.

Froggie teams have not exactly been powerhouses of the Champions League. He should just **** off and die

It's one of those weird ones.

At it's essence, football is basically entertainment the same as the movie industry.

The movie industry is all about money, imports lots of talent, overpays stars etc and no-one really as an issue. But football...

Don't get me wrong. It is different, I know. Not many people feel passionately about Hollywood like they do about the 'Pool or whomever their flavor may be if they have ****ty taste.

I mean, how often do you sit there a month after a movie thinking "****ing hell. ******* scriptwriters ripped us off. x should have won that fight!!!"

But still it is the same in essence and hard to quantify why not in practice. Which, to get to the point of this, is why the foreign owners is such a bad thing. They come in seeing it at it's essence and treating it like a business the way they would a Hollywood studio.

They're not really doing anything wrong in this, they've not grown up with the game, it's just a form of entertainment to them. We're the ones doing wrong by letting them in.

But as much as this is the case, it's too late to stop it now. The horse is well and truly bolted. We have to learn to live with it and move on.

lets have him retract his words on hooliganism at the tournament now the stupid prick

                              racist germans arrested
croats austrians and poles all arrested.

i suppose they'll have a similar policy to when an english fan drops a t-shirt of threatening a 20 year ban??

no ****in chance - UEFA with this guy at the helm is a ****ing joke
