    RIP Ernie Cooksey

Grays Athletic and ex-Oldham and Rochdale midfielder Ernie Cooksey died last night after losing his battle with cancer. He was 27.

He was a popular player in the north-west and the Oldham and Rochdale fans I know up here are all very sad.

This was posted on the net by someone close to Ernie just before he passed away:

    "To all..........

Where to start..... Ernie slipped into a coma in the early hours of this morning, his fiancee Louise and family are currently by his side.

On behalf of the family I would like to thank each and every one of you for your continued support and for any of the many fundrasing event held in his name.

Everyone is still fighing and rooting for him he said he never wanted sympathy he wants everyone upbeat, hard in such times I know but we must do as he wishes.

Thank you all again for your continued support.

    Ernie for England".
Ernie's partner, Louise, is due to give birth to their first child in just four weeks.

    RIP Ernie.

This is really hard. 27 FFS, no age to die.

    RIP

One of my Oldham mates has just sent me this

Feel very numb now even though it was expected. A true Latics legend. Wasn't the best player by far but had the heart of a lion.

I will always have 3 very strong memories of him. When he came on the scene at a pre-season friendly at Rochdale. Totally ran midfield and had us singing "Ernie for England" after 10 mins of him coming on! Second was his first goal for the club, an equaliser against QPR. He could really jump for headers and I think when the corner came in, his head was actually above the crossbar!! Third was a boxing day cracker, in off the far post, at Grimsby.... At least we gave him a good send off and at least he passed away peacefully in his sleep.

Tragic. Seen a lot of people die from cancer unfortunately, but whenhe's only 27 and as a pregnant wife it's all teh worse.

                    Truly awful.
