I dont really see much of a difference between this and what Fowler done by sniffing the grass at the Everton fans. Stupid but I know all my friends who supports Rangers found it kind of funny.
    Big difference IMO.

Fowler did not incite the opposition fans with his 'sniffing' whereas the flute gesture is hitting far more sensitivities that go beyond football.

spot on, Healy has stepped into the murky world of religous disputes. so much more difference than a bit of banter and piss taking.

I am sure recovering addicts and Everton fans might disagree. The match Fowler picked was a lot more likely to erupt after that than a friendly match between Celtic and Fulham. The time Gazza done it was a hell of a lot worse due to it being an Old Firm match and that could really have kicked of into a mass riot.
I really dont know anyone from across here including Catholics who think it is that big a thing. Most people just calling him a stupid prick but really dont care.
Seems to be getting blown out of proportion by people who really dont know what it is all about and how times have changed across here.
I think Marky is from Derry? If so he might have different views after the amount of hassle flute bands have caused up there.

I can confirm that flute band members are c*nts. But I also agree that this incident has been made into a big deal by people who know nothing or very little about these things. Most people, including mates of mine who support Celtic and Cliftonville, thought Healy was a dick and now don't really care about it.

They were the ones calling him a beakhead in the first place.

What Fowler did was stupid as it brought unwanted attention to the club and himself, but it wasn't "offensive", per say.

Yup Everton fans were going on about Fowler being a druggie so he done a drug thing to get at them. The Celtic fans were going on about Healys religion so he done a religous thing back. Both players/ fans wrong and stupid but thats football for you.

I find the opposite unfortunately - every year on the 12th I want it to piss down and it always seems to be sunny.

But yes the bands and their hangers-on seem to consist of a massive group of scary looking ****ers and underage spides all drinking WKD and behaving like the biggest scumbags in the world.

Just goes to show that even though there is peace in Northern Ireland its gonna take quite a while to get rid of generations of hate.

It's the feckless & fearsome roving gangs of flute playing thugs i'm worried about, & the prospect of being beaten up or worse to the sound of James Galway's greatest hits.

That would be wrong, the thing is the people who are getting over it are never talked about while the people with hatred keep getting brought up. Been so much change in the last 10 years people wouldnt recognise the country if they hadnt visited for a bit.
Will always get the staunch loyalist areas and catholic areas were you are right and it could take a long time to change. They are brought up there, work there, marry people from there and go out and party there and refuse to mix.
Thankfully they only equate to a very small percentage of the general public and in whole its a peaceful country. Thankfully the Government and USA are pumping millions into the less fortunate areas in the hope that this will speed the harmony between the communities up.
Now a days in the Protestant areas the terrorists groups are fighting amongst themselves for drug money, protection money etc and you hardly ever hear of sectarian attacks its mostly just gang wars now. The public on both sides has turned against all terrorism and you cant have a successful terrorist war without the backing of your communities.

So that would be right then.

Celtic fans have just proved that unfortunately.

What have Celtic fans proved? That football fans jump on every opportunity to stick it to the footballers they dont like? I dont blame them I jumped all over the fact Neville ran all the way down at Anfield when they scored.
No harm but its clear you dont understand or fully know the politics over here. You are not from over here and it would take far to long to explain 400 odd years of Irish history to you.
There has been so much violence and hatred over here. If you have had your town blown up, people killed, known or being part of police brutality then the majority of people dont really see someone doing a flute gesture as anything that big.
Dont mean to be rude but if you dont understand a situation you are best saying out of it.

When I open the link all I get is a Photo, is he playing a flute or doing a poor impersonation of a cat? You would think his hands would be the other way round if he was playing the flute.

That's one of the things that does my head in about football fans, there's a certain level of hypocrisy, that you can stand there and slag a player off saying in some cases awful things about their religion, partners infedelity, drugs or just because you hate the guy and as soon as they do something back, like stick up two fingers a number of fans become offended.

I'm not defending the players actions but in some cases I can see why players react like they do
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.
